Thursday, June 16, 2011

Overnight rains soften the fairways and greens and allow the score to be lower than average for the first round of the US Open. The man who took the greatest advantage was Rory McIlroy, maintaining his good game in the recent majors: he took the lead after the first round of the 2010 Open Championship and after all the first three rounds of the 2011 Master Tournament, as well as completing the T-3 at the 2010 PGA Championship. free bogey to sit on six under-par, three ahead of two main winners: YE Yang, 2009 PGA champion, and Charl Schwartzel, who beat McIlroy at the 2011 Masters and so are looking for both straight majors. The big group with two under-par players including the resurgent Sergio GarcÃÆ'a, defending champion Louis Oosthuizen, and some unexpected names, including explorers Scott Hend and Alexandre Rocha. 22-year-old New Yorker Chris DeForest, playing in her first professional tournament, seems to be joining them until doubled his last hole for 71. Defending champion Graeme McDowell placed well after opening 70; he was with Robert Rock, who had just arrived at 3am that morning after visa issues. However, the marquee groups Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, number one, two and three in the world, are all struggling, respectively 74, 75 and 74. The leading amateurs are Peter Uihlein and Brad Benjamin, who are both in one-over- par.

Rory McIlroy was headline once again on Friday, as he continued his good form, solving some US Open valuation records in the process. Early in the morning session, he added two eagles on the 8th hole for a pars succession and birdie, and a two-putt birdie on 16 took him to 12-under-par. It binds a record score below par for each player, at every point of the tournament in US Open history; Gil Morgan and Tiger Woods had previously achieved the feat, but after playing only 34 holes at the time, McIlroy was the fastest to reach. One hole later, another bird makes the Northern Ireland player the first player in US Open history to reach 13 under par. A double-bogey was soon in the 18th - McIlroy's first shot that fell from the tournament - took him back to 11-under, and second round 66, but record-breaking continued: eventually his six shots led together after 36 holes in major championship history. McIlroy also set records for the fewest holes to reach 10-under-par, 26 holes, (13 fewer than the previous record) and the lowest 36-hole total in US Open history.

The man who led McIlroy was Y. E. Yang of South Korea, who added 69 at his opening 68 to sit alone at five under par; he himself is three clear of the chase pack. Sergio Garcaa's solid form continues, and he is in the group in two under-par, as Matt Kuchar is consistent after 68. Further down the pitch, Marcel Siem of Germany is tied for the low round of the day, equaling McIlroy's 66 to rise to the top field after a disappointing opening 79. Amateur Patrick Cantlay also hit a streak line, shooting nine back from 30 to finish round 67 and moving into par, tying for low amateurs with Russell Henley. The main group of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer enjoyed a slightly better day, as all three fought hard to stay within the boundary line, with Westwood leading three on one over-par. Like all afternoon opener, they were interrupted by a 42-minute delay in the game as the storm drove past the Congressional Country Club; this meant seven groups had to return on Saturday morning to finish their rounds. After finishing second round on Saturday morning, the cuts fell on a four-over-par, with 72 players qualifying for the last two rounds.

  • Amateur: Cantlay (E), Henley (E), Benjamin (3) , Williams (7), Uihlein (8), Pan (10), Hossler (11) Pinckney (12), Irwin (13), Patterson (13), Chung (15), Barbosa (24)

Conditions continue to allow a good assessment on Saturday, with some players taking advantage. Rory McIlroy is not interested in releasing his leadership. Nine steady forward saw him back 13 under par, after Friday's closing twice, when he birdied at par-five 9. Once again 13 proved to be an unlucky number for McIlroy when he bogeyed the 10th hole, but he with quickly regaining his composure to become the first man to reach 14-under-par at the US Open, before parring his way home. With him, former PGA champion Y. E. Who scrambles well through a difficult nine ahead, and takes two shots in his inner nine for good 70, placing him in the last pair once again on Sunday. Below it, Saturday began to live the title of "moving day". Jason Day, runner-up in the 2011 Masters Tournament, and world number two Lee Westwood jumped through the field with his best 65s to move into a third tie and second from behind for Sunday; Westwood's third-round play partner Fredrik Jacobson fared just one shot worse with a score of 66. This matched the low score among the early starters, made by main debutant Webb Simpson, whose 66 took him from the cutline line to one under-par, and the top 15.

  • Amateur: Cantlay (-1), Henley (E), Benjamin (12)

Rory McIlroy started the last day with eight shots from Y. E. Yang. McIlroy initially birdied the first hole and also went on to the fourth birdie. He almost lost the danger of water with his feet in the sixth hole, but still managed to make par. At this point, Yang is two below the standard for the day but does not challenge McIlroy. At par-3 10, The first plays and strikes his tee into four legs; McIlroy followed with an approach that captured the top of the slope behind the flag, and dripped past Yang's ball to finish just a few inches from the cup. This birdie moved McIlroy to a 17-under-par record for the tournament. A bogey on the 12th dropped him down 16. At par-5 16, he got 17-under again with a birdie but lost a shot with a bogey on the 17th green, just a three-putt tournament, finishing at 16-under. Two bogeys in the back nine saw Yang fall back into the tie for third place, with younger Jason Day Australia moving into second place on his own; it was the second runner-up in the majors, only in the fourth major beginning; but he's eight blows way behind McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy and Robert Garrigus achieved a rare feat in shooting all four under-par golf rounds at the US Open. This happened only four times before in the event's history. Who will join this group if not for bogey on the 72nd hole. McIlroy also has the additional distinction of setting a low 72-hole open US number for total shots and shots below par, respectively at 268 and -16. McIlroy also became only the third golfer to shoot all four rounds under 70 at the US Open, after Lee Trevino in 1968 and Lee Janzen in 1993.
