College career

Simms played soccer at the University of Texas at Austin from 1999-2002.

He spent his first year as reserve for Major Applewhite, and saw limited play time until the end of the season. Go to Texas A & amp; M (Bonfire game called as following the tragic death of 12 students during the construction of A & amp; m's annual bonfire), Texas was ranked # 5, but just before that game, Applewhite got a virus intestine that kept him awake all night and required him to put into IV the next day. As a result, Simms started his first career and made Longhorn up 16-6 at halftime. After Simms struggled in the 2nd round, and with Texas still up front, he was replaced by Applewhite in the 4th quarter, but Applewhite could not get Texas points, they trailed in the last 6 minutes and Applewhite fumbled their last possession. Simms took over again during the Cotton Bowl, when Applewhite suffered a knee injury in the 4th quarter.

The next season Applewhite again became a starter, but Simms is more of a co-quarterback than a reserve. After Applewhite played poorly in defeat to Stanford in the 2nd game, Simms was given the start of his second career in the next game against Houston. Simms struggled early and Applewhite got most of the snaps in what turned out to be a defeat so Applewhite regained the role as a starter. Simms will again get a chance to start when Applewhite suffered a season-ending knee injury on the last drive of the Texas Tech game. Simms played well, throwing for 240 yards or more in every game, including a 383 yard match against # 21 Texas A & amp; M, most often done by Texas QB against Aggies. Texas went 2-1 with Simms as a quarterback, with the only defeat against # 8 Oregon, a Texan game could win - although Simms set the record for interception in the Holiday Bowl game by 4, but for three goals fell touchdown on the last push. Mack Brown was impressed enough to mention Simms as a starter before the start of spring training, a decision that proved controversial.

The Longhorns are ranked # 5 to start the 2001 season and Simms games through the first four games are good enough to keep them there. But in Red River Rivalry, Texas faces 3 Oklahoma and four interception, including one in the end zone of Sooner and one that is returned for touchdown, sealing the Oklahoma victory. Nevertheless, Simms recovered to lead Texas to 6 straight wins with five 200-yard live passes, including a dominating win over # 14 Colorado and their second straight win over Aggies, ranked # 3, and a rematch against # 10 Colorado in the 12th Championship.. Due to the disappointment of Florida the previous day, Texas went into the 12th Championship game knowing that a win would likely put them in the 2002 BCS Championship Match. But Simms has a disastrous game. He was responsible for four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble) in the first round of play. In the second quarter, after being booed by Texas fans, Simms injured his finger and Applewhite entered the match with Texas down 29-10. Applewhite led Texas back into 2 points, but eventually Texas would lose a short 39-37 after a failed onside attempt. The strong fight of Applewhite, combined with Simms injuries, resulted in Simms sitting outside the Holiday Bowl 2001.

Texas came into the 2002 season with high hopes and ranked # 2. Simms was a season-long starter, and he chose a career as high as 3,207 yards, 2nd to Applewhite only then. Texas won the first 5 games and then faced their first challenge against Oklahoma # 3. Texas led the match until the fourth quarter, when Simms 3's interception made Oklahoma's winning goal. Simms and Texas recovered to beat # 17 Kansas State and # 17 Iowa State in the early and rear weeks followed by victories over Nebraska and Baylor to climb back to rank # 3 in the rankings. But the following week, Texas Tech midfielder Kliff Kingsbury threw 473 yards to disrupt Longhorns 42-38, though Simms played one of his best games, and tackled their national championship dream. Simms closed the year with his third straight win over Texas A & amp; M and his first bowl won # 25 LSU in the Cotton Bowl. At the Cotton Bowl, he threw 269 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception - with over half of the yards going to Cotton Bowl MVP Roy Williams. Simms named MVP team for this season.

He finished with a career record of 26-6, the second largest winning number, at the time, for Bobby Layne. He also played in the Senior Bowl 2002 where he threw interception that went for a 99 foot record of the Senior Bowl's yard.

Professional career

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Simms was drafted with the last pick of the 3rd round in 2003 by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in hopes that he would eventually become a substitute for Brad Johnson. He is 4th in the Bucs depth chart behind Johnson and former Buccaneers class player Shaun King. Simms sat the whole year rookie without playing a flash in the regular season.

In 2004, Simms started the season as a 3rd string stringback again, this time behind Johnson and former Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins starter Brian Griese, but quickly advanced to reserve quarterback after a bad preseason by Griese. Simms saw his first action on September 19, 2004 against the Seattle Seahawks after a below-average performance by Johnson, getting into the game with 10:32 left in the 2nd quarter. Simms went 21-32 with 175 yards and interception. Simms received their first start of two games later against the New Orleans Saints on October 10, 2004 after Bucs started 0-4 and Johnson was rewarded for poor performances. Simms went 5-8 to 75 yards but injured his shoulder early in the game and missed three weeks, allowing Brian Griese to secure a position with 3 consecutive wins. Simms sees the occasional act as a backup QB for Griese and starts a meaningless final game against the Arizona Cardinals where he throws for 224 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

In 2005, Simms was scheduled on an in-depth chart as a backup quarterback, behind Griese and ahead of a former Cleveland Browns substitute, Luke McCown. Simms got his first snap of the season after Miami Dolphins midfielder Zach Thomas was pushed to Griese's feet with a few minutes left in the game on October 16, 2005. Despite the injury, the Buccaneers won 27-13 in a match in which Griese got lost. for this season. Simms performs well, completing 6 out of 10 feeds for 69 meters. Simms started his first season early in the next week against a weak San Francisco 49ers squad. While Simms has a decent number (21-34, 264yds, 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions), its performance is considered bad, as there are many times when he does his recipients, skipping open recipients, or misreading defensive coverage. Simms followed up on this performance with almost the same performance (25-42, 259, 1 goal, 2 interceptions) against the rival division of the Carolina Panthers, who are considered a much better team than San Francisco. However, due to these two losses, Simms performs better than expected and has a talent for heroic late-game. He leads the fourth-quarter indictment against fellow Atlanta rivals twice, as well as the Washington Redskins. Redskin's game was his best performance of the year when Simms made 3 pitches as the Buccaneers won 36-35 in a remarkable match. Simms had a much more impressive performance in a rematch against Carolina on the road. Two losses in this stretch are against the Super Bowl champions New England Patriots, and Chicago Bears, who are ranked # 1 in the league in total defense, and in both of these games, Simms has no interceptions, and is fired 11 times. He even led Tampa Bay into another fourth-quarter comeback against the Bears but a 29-yard field wide right-hand effort gave the Bears a 13-10 victory.

Simms led the Buccaneers to their first playoff spot since their Super Bowl victory in 2002. In a rematch vs. Redskins Simms led Tampa Bay back from a 17-3 part-time deficit. With a score of 17-10 at the end of the fourth quarter, Simms hit Edell Shepherd on a 35-minute touchdown strike. However, Shepherd failed to retain possession when he touched the ground. Tampa Bay lost 17-10 in a match in which Washington only earned 120 yards of fouls, the lowest total for a playoff winner in NFL history.

Life-threatening injuries

Simms suffered a season-ending injury in Game 3 of the 2006 schedule. On Sunday, Sept. 24, he was expelled from the pitch after receiving a hard blow from the Carolina Panthers defense. Simms returned to the game and even led a successful scoring drive, but remained in physical trouble and was taken to the nearest hospital after the game. The test revealed the spleen ruptured, and Simms immediately underwent emergency surgery. As a result, Simms said he lost five pints of blood before the operation and admitted that another 45 minutes without treatment could be fatal. This injury is believed by some to have been caused by an illegal attack from Al Wallace, which was later fined by the NFL. However, Simms complains of pain and shortness of breath, symptoms of spleen problems, before exposure. Playing on a one-year contract, $ 2.1 million signed before the season, Simms qualified for a free agent for 2007.

On December 27, 2006, Simms announced that he had signed a two-year extension to stay with Buccaneers in the hope that he would start. However, due to the complications of the recovery and performance of Jeff Garcia in the mini-camp, Simms is expected to serve as a backup for Garcia. On October 9th, Simms is placed at Wounded Reserve for the rest of the season. Bucs are expected to keep Simms on the list for the mini camp as their fifth quarterback.

Simms's relationship with head coach Jon Gruden deteriorated significantly during this period. Simms attributed the lack of playing time to how Gruden treated him during his recovery from a spleen injury. He even said that "The relationship between me and coach Gruden, it's broken," said Simms. "And I do not see any way to get better." Simms also said that he would never forgive Gruden, although he still respects Buccaneer as an organization.

On August 30, 2008, Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Simms. He worked with the Baltimore Ravens during pre-season but was not signed.

First task with Titans

Simms signed with Tennessee Titans on September 9, 2008 after starter Vince Young was sidelined with dislocated MCL. In Young's absence, Simms served as backup quarterback behind Kerry Collins until 3 October, when Simms was released to make room for substitute Josh Miller. Simms was re-signed the following week on October 6th.

Denver Broncos

On March 4, 2009, Simms signed a two-year, $ 6 million contract with the Denver Broncos. The deal includes a signing bonus of $ 1.5 million and Simms can earn an additional $ 3 million through incentives. He is a backup quarterback for Kyle Orton. However, he took over in the second half of the game against the Washington Redskins after Orton went with a sprained ankle, and finally gave up the lead to the Redskins while going 3-13 passes for 13 yards without touchdown and one interception. He started against the San Diego Chargers on 22 November 2009 but was quickly replaced by Orton in the second quarter after going on a disappointing 2 for 4 just 10 yards. He was released on March 15, 2010 after the Broncos traded for Brady Quinn.

Second job with Titans

On April 12, 2010, Simms was re-signed by the Tennessee Titans.

On September 4th, 2010, Simms was cut from the Titans list. On November 22, 2010, he again signed a contract with reserve midfielder Rusty Smith, after a season-ending injury to Vince Young.
