Denver Broncos

Portis rushed for over 1,500 yards in each of his first two seasons with the Broncos, averaging 5.5 meters per carry in that range. The latter is the NFL record for the first two seasons of running back. On 15 December 2002, Portis became the youngest player (21 years, 105 days) to score 4 goals in a match in a 31-24 victory over Kansas City's Chief. The following season on December 7, 2003, Portis became the youngest player (22 years, 97 days) to score 5 goals in the match in a 45-27 victory, which also happened against Kansas City.

Redeem

Prior to the 2004 season, the Broncos sold Portis to the Redskins for the Corn Bailey cornerback and second-round draft pick in the 2004 NFL Draft which the Broncos used to select Tatum Bell (and Bell used Portis number 26 in Denver). The Redskins signed Portis for an eight-year contract worth $ 50.5 million. At that time, there were trade criticisms, namely that closing corners like Bailey were hard to come by and that added a second round option for too many Portis and one-sided. Critics also feel that Portis is simply the product of the Broncos O-line scheme, and will not be much successful in Washington, which is usually suitable for more physical runners, power (such as Stephen Davis or John Riggins).

Washington Redskins

In the 2004 season, he had to adjust to the style of running coach Joe Gibbs, who mostly consisted of a power run. Despite taking his first Redskins carrying 64 yards for the TD in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was a rather rough adjustment to Portis because Denver's run style consists of stretching runs and walking out. Adjustments are made more rough by the offensive line being drained mainly due to injury. He finished 2004 with 1,315 meters for a rushed average of 3.8 pages. He had a very difficult time finding the final zone, finishing with a total of eight goals (5 rushing, 2 receiving, and one passing). However, Portis bounced back in the 2005 season. Although Gibbs still runs a strong style of football, he implements more beyond running the game into a rushed Redskins attack to better suit Portis's running style. Portis has a much better season, proving that he can run in and out and become a better pioneer. Although he did not go into the final zone until the fifth game of the season, he finished strongly and had 12 goals total (11 rushed and one passing). On a 14-yard run against the Philadelphia Eagles on January 1, 2006, he broke the Redskins' franchise record for the hottest yard in a season with 1,516 yards and tied at least 100 games a season in a season (5). He ended the game with a rushing 112 yards. Rushing for 1,516 meters, he became only the third runner in league history to reach 1,500 yards in three of his first four seasons.

Portis showed his speed during the Redskins training camp 2006, running a 4.26 second run for 40 yards. Shortly afterwards, on 13 August 2006 Portis suffered a dislocated shoulder partly in the first quarter of a 1-week pre-season game after tackling Cincinnati Bengals golf course Keiwan Ratliff following the Bengals attack. After the injury, Portis said: "I do not know why I or any other player of my caliber should play in pre-season." He added, "I think for the last four years I've done enough to show the world that I will be ready for the season."

There is no direct indication of Redskins about when Portis will return to active play status. However, he returned early to the Redskins 'Monday Night Football' game against the Minnesota Vikings, where he earned 39 yards on 10 brought with one touchdown. The Redskins lost 19-16, the clock ended when Redskins kicker John Hall lost the left wing on goal. Portis rebounded in the next few weeks with 16 bringing for 86 yards and 2 goals against Houston Texans, and 27 bringing for 112 yards and a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fascinated by injuries throughout the season, Portis suffered another setback in the first quarter of the November 12 loss to the Redskins Philadelphia Eagles. Portis left the game with a hand injury and was replaced by Ladell Betts reserve. X-rays reveal that Portis broke his right hand during the game. He was operated on and placed on the Redskins Reserve list, three days later, on November 15th.

Redskins agreed to guarantee Portis' 2008-2009 and most of its basic salary in March last year. This is equivalent to a $ 15 million guarantee. Portis, also got a $ 10.2 million "signing bonus" after the restructuring.

During his career with Washington Redskins, Portis made several appearances in TV commercials for Easterns Automotive Group, a local car dealer group in the DC and Baltimore areas, with Jason Campbell, Randle El and Chris Cooley.

2007

In March 2007, Portis weighed on a recent legal issue. Michael Vick began to involve himself, the upcoming allegations including dogfighting, which is a big crime. Portis takes a controversial view of the situation that states, "I do not know if he fights dogs or not, but it's his, that's his dog," Washington Redskins ran back Clinton Portis told WAVY-TV in Virginia. "If that's what he wants to do, do it.I guess people have to take care of their business." He further went on to state in the same interview that "I know a lot of backroads that have dog fighting if you want to go see it." Later on the same Monday, he released a statement via the Redskins website quickly backed down on a previous statement, "In a recent interview I gave about dog fighting, I wanted to explain it that I did not take part in dog fighting or fighting with dogs. in any way. "

2008

In 2008, Portis fell just from what should have been his hottest 1500-yard season in seven years, ending with 1,484 yards and an average of 4.3 yards per carry. The season was highlighted by a five-week span in which Portis earned nearly 700 yards, ending with a 26 October win over the Detroit Lions. During this range Clinton Portis joins O.J. Simpson is the only player in NFL history to hurry at least 120 yards in five consecutive games twice in a career (Portis first did it for two seasons with four games with Denver in 2003 and one game with Washington in 2004). Portis leads the NFL in a rush until the end of November 23 before a disruptive injury and limited playing time slows it down; he only gained 281 yards in his last five games when the Redskins lost four of five to miss the playoffs. Nonetheless, he was selected for the Pro Bowl over DeAngelo Williams, though Williams has better stats at the end of the season.

Some controversy caused on December 9, 2008 when Clinton Portis made a negative statement about Redskins coach Jim Zorn in his weekly appearance on WTEM-AM radio, criticizing Zorn for giving inconsistent messages and sarcastically calling him a "genius." Portis still felt irritated at his lack of playing time on Sunday, 24-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, when he was removed from the game after the first series of the second half. In the offseason, Portis stated that he was trying to establish a better relationship with Zorn, but admitted that he did not have the relationship he shared with former head coach Joe Gibbs, whom he described as a "great relationship," and stated that Gibbs was "one the best man so far as guidance, or the way he lived his life, the example of a true champion. "

2009

During the 9th Sunday game against the Atlanta Falcons, Portis suffered a concussion. The attack caused Portis to lose consciousness and leave the game. Portis missed four games in a row with symptoms like concussions. Portis went to see a specialist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 1, 2009. It was reported that on December 8, Portis was officially placed on a wounded reserve. It took him four months to get his playing permission again.

2010

The start of the 2010 season saw Portis reunion and newly appointed coach Mike Shanahan, former Portis coach of his first two career seasons with the Denver Broncos. Despite a positive outlook with the new coaching staff, injuries continue to harass Portis as he has to deal with stomach and groin injuries. During his seventh year as Redskin, Portis only played five games and counted only 227 yards rushing throughout the season, including two goals. Both goals were scored in the September 19 home game against Houston Texans.

2011

On February 28, 2011, Portis was released by the Redskins after repeated contract negotiations and recurring injuries. After being released, Portis feels that the passion has been lost from the team since Gibbs retired, saying, "I never saw anyone give up or with their heads down with Coach Gibbs because of the many close matches we played... you can not say one we gave in. There was passion and resilience among everyone in that field to fight until the end of time. "

Retirement

On August 21, 2012, Portis announced his resignation. He was 77 yards from a rushed 10,000-meter mark, making him a 27-year-old rusher the whole time he ranks in the top 20 runs back in all time. He officially retired on August 23 and during a press conference it was announced that he made it into the Biggest 80 Redskins List of All Time. After his retirement, Portis admitted suffering from 10 concussions. In 2013, Portis joins former players like Daunte Culpepper, Cadillac Williams and Art Monk in a civil lawsuit against the NFL due to concussions and head injuries.
