After releasing the sack leader of DeMarcus Ware's franchise career in the salary cap movement and having previously lost starter Jason Hatcher and Jay Ratliff, the Dallas Cowboys looked to improve their defense talent in the 2014 NFL Draft. The team traded with the Washington Redskins move into the 34th position, as replace for the second (# 47-Trent Murphy) and third-round draft options (# 78-Spencer Long), to pick Lawrence in the second half. After fracturing his right foot in the training camp, he started the year on an injured reserve list and did not appear in the match until the 9th week against Arizona Cardinals. The lost time affects his game and with little impact (11 tackle without sack), he can not get the final defensive starter job right in front of Jeremy Mincey.
He will play an important role in the wild card playoff game against the Detroit Lions on January 4, 2015, with the Cowboys leading 24-20 and more than 2 minutes left in the game, quarterback Matthew Stafford fumbling deep inside the Detroit area. Instead of falling on the ball to lower it and secure the rotation of the game, Lawrence tries to pick it up and scores a goal, which causes him to underestimate the ball back into the Lions. He will redeem himself on the next drive, at 4 and 3 with one minute left and the Lions threaten to win the match from the Cowboys' 42-yard line, he sacks Stafford, causing groping and restoring everything in one play, sealing the win. He has a strong performance in the playoffs with two sacks, a forced failure and two failed recovery.
By 2015, though Greg Hardy's late defensive is a major offseason acquisition by the Cowboys, Lawrence will end up having a greater impact than his left defensive final position. She enters the season with an improved physical presence and will develop her skill-edge skills every week. He finished the season with a seven-match streak with at least a sack, registering a total of eight (leading the team), 31 quarterback pressure (second on team) and 56 tackles. His best games come against the New Orleans Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Washington Redskins, and the New York Jets. In January 2016, he underwent a surgery, which turned out to be more serious than originally thought.
On 30 June 2016, Lawrence was suspended for four matches, after his appeal was denied. Lawrence is relatively unproductive during the 2016 NFL season, only recording 1 sack in 12 matches played, this year at the far right.
Lawrence had a runaway season in 2017 after shifting back to the left side, his natural position. On September 17, 2017, in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, Lawrence forced himself from Trevor Siemian's quarterback. The humility helped set the Cowboys on a goal-scored drive in 42-17 losses. On Week 3 of the 2017 season, Lawrence fired Carson Palmer Cardinals quarterback three times, giving him a 6.5 sack lead league. Her performance on Sunday 3 earned her the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Lawrence's 6.5 sack is enough to get NFC Defensive Player of the Month player, for September. On December 19, 2017, after a breakout season with 14.5 sacks, Lawrence was named for his first Pro Bowl. His 14.5 sacks finished tied for the second in the league with Jaguars 'Calais Campbell behind Cardinals' Chandler Jones.
On March 5, 2018, Cowboys placed a franchise label at Lawrence, which officially signed it on the day after they could not reach a long-term deal.
