Eli Stone is an American legal drama TV series, named for its title character. The series was created by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, who also served as executive producer along with Ken Olin who directed the pilot, producing Melissa Berman. The series aired on ABC from January 31, 2008 to July 11, 2009, for two seasons.

The series follows Stone (Jonny Lee Miller), a San Francisco lawyer who begins hallucinations (like George Michael's soundtrack he can only hear and thrown with a bomb by a World War I biplane on a busy San Francisco street) that leads to two possible conclusions: a fatal brain aneurysm, or possibly something bigger is at work. His visions lead him to accept cases with little monetary gain but many moral virtues; Stone also predicted the earthquake that struck San Francisco. Other such events occur throughout the series, but the series is canceled before reaching a coherent conclusion.

The series has been filled with generally favorable reviews from critics, and both seasons have been released on DVD.

Premise

Greg Berlanti, who co-wrote the show with Marc Guggenheim, described Eli Stone in Variety as a Field of Dreams -type drama set in a the law firm in which thirty-something lawyers, whose name is the title of the show, begins to have a bigger vision of life that forces it to do extraordinary things. " Eli suffers from an inoperable brain aneurysm that causes him to have a tangible hallucination that is often associated with the episode plot as far as he is considered a modern-day prophet.

Pop singer George Michael stood out during the first season of the series, and each episode was named after one of his songs. He was a fan of Michael and tried to get him to appear on the show. Like that fate, Michael claims he is a "TV addict". This led the singer to agree to perform several episodes, including one in which Stone represented him in the case of a teenage girl who played the song "I Want Your Sex" in protest against a sex education program without abstinence in her school.

The procedural law arrangements, a mixture of comedy and drama, and the use of fantasy series have drawn comparisons with the Ally McBeal series from some critics.

Ratings

Critical reception

The first season is filled with a favorable overview, and currently holds Metacritic's score of 62 out of 100, based on 24 reviews collected. The second season was greeted with a more enthusiastic response, and held a Metacritic score of 72 out of 100, based on 9 reviews collected.

Controversy

The inaugural episode draws controversy because of the plot, which illustrates the hypothesis that autism is caused by mercury-based preservatives previously used in childhood vaccines and treating hypotheses as credible and legally appealing. This hypothesis is not supported by scientific evidence, but has contributed to a decrease in vaccination rates. The American Academy of Pediatrics asks ABC to cancel the episode or include a disclaimer stressing that mercury is not used in routine childhood vaccines, and there is no scientific connection between vaccines and autism. ABC instead decided to present a written notice and voice over the episode saying "The previous tale was fictitious and did not depict actual people, companies, products or events", with a second card directing viewers to the autism website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
