College career
Illinois
Smith started playing for Illinois in the 2005-2006 season. Illinois had just played in the NCAA National Championship in March before, and then lost junior guard Deron Williams to the NBA, so Smith's natural shooter seemed to be in a perfect position to step into a vacuum and become team leader. Although he was a bench as a freshman, Smith still managed to become Fifth's top scorer in Illinois that year, appearing in 32 of 33 matches; he leads the Big Ten Conference in three-point shooting percentage (48.2%), and is the selection of the All-Student Big Ten team.
The 2006-2007 sophomore season for Smith started with a problem, as he suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener against Austin Peay when an opposing player stepped on his ankle. Smith missed the next six games, and also injured another ankle that compensated an ankle sprain; Smith never had full strength during the season. On February 10, 2007, Fighting Illini lost to Indiana University's arch-rival basketball with a score of 61-65 in a game played in Bloomington, Indiana. This will be Jamar Smith's last match ever played in Illinois jersey. (View DUI Arrest)
South Indiana
On December 30, 2008, after nearly two years absent from college basketball, Smith went to court as a member of the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. The rusting, nervous and shy skills of having to play while wearing an ankle monitor caused a slow start in his first game for USI, but Smith soon returned to his old form, leading his team to national rank # 2 in the Second Division, and was given an Honorable Mention Division II All-American, and finish the season with an average of 18.5 points per game. As a senior in 2010, Smith was named Player of the Year 2 of Basketball Players of the Year, averaging 21.6 points per game.

DUI Capture
On the night of February 12, 2007, Central Illinois experienced one of the biggest snowstorms it had received in the previous ten years, dumping 15 "snow in the Champaign area, and making a dangerous journey.Around 9 pm that night, Smith and Illini collaborator Brian Carlwell, both 19 years old at that time, began drinking in one of the apartments in the complex where they lived in the small town of Savoy, Illinois, about 10 minutes south of the Assembly Hall (now State Farm Center), the Illinois University of Illinois basketball arena said he was involved in a drink that they call "Power Hour" - drank one shot of tequila every 60 seconds, a dozen shots total.According to the witness, Smith and Carlwell leave the apartment at about 11 pm after "things get chaotic and out of control" and into Lexus in 1996 owned by Smith's grandfather, the two drunk players went to a snowstorm to a university campus on a snowy road.
Shortly thereafter, Smith returned to the apartment, looking shaken, and incoherent. About a mile from the apartment, Smith lost control of the car in the snow, spun 180 degrees, and the passenger door crashed into a tree on the opposite side of the road. He drove back to the apartment complex and Brian Carlwell was still outside on the passenger side of the car - Smith said that Carlwell was dead. Witnesses said Smith was so desperate to think of killing his friend that he broke the window and tried to harm himself and be in control.
Witnesses outside the apartment spotted a wrecked car with someone inside who did not move, and called 911. When the authorities arrived, Carlwell was not dead, but unconsciously-he suffered a severe concussion and was treated in the local area. the hospital where he was treated in an induced coma for four days after the accident. The amateur photographs of Smith's damaged car are being driven simultaneously by the administrator of Illinois's premier basketball discussion forum.
Carlwell, the new 6'10 "reserve center for Illini, rejoined the team a week later, but did not play in any of the last eight games of the season. He played only three games for Illinois the following season, and in February 2008, one years after the accident, Carlwell announced that he had moved to San Diego State University, where he played his last two college seasons.
Jamar Smith was charged by the Sheriff of Champaign County with the DUI being Exacerbated (due to Carlwell's severe injury) and Leaving an Accident Scene Involving Personal Injury; both charges are serious criminal offenses in Illinois. Smith's blood alcohol content that night was 176, more than twice the legal limit.08. Three months after the accident, Smith filed a guilty plea to DUI with severe physical damage, and left the scene dropped as part of a plea agreement. Partly because Smith had no previous criminal record of any kind, he received relatively light sentences - 15 days in prison, a $ 850 fine, two years trial, and 75 hours of community service. He was also ordered not to consume alcohol as a condition of his probation. After a guilty plea, the Illinois basketball program suspended Smith for a year, and allowed him to redshirt during that time, thus not losing a year of NCAA eligibility during the suspension.
Trial Abuse
Smith completed a university suspension in May 2008, and NCAA basketball experts speculated on the effect of Smith's return to the team for Illinois, as the team has struggled to find a consistent shooter. But Jamar Smith was still under two years of probation imposed by the court, when on July 25 that year, the police were summoned to the scene 2:30 am outside the campus bar area. Smith was not involved in any way in the quarrel, but police said they ordered Smith, and others who were on the scene, to stay away from the fight to avoid inflaming the incident. The police said that Smith went three times, but each time he returned to the scene. The police then approached Smith, saying he smelled of alcohol and asked him about it, and Smith admitted he had some beer. As a famous local athlete, the police know who Smith is, and they also know that his DUI punishment forbids him from consuming alcohol. He was not arrested at the time but a few days later, Champaign County District Attorney Julia Reitz asked the judge to withdraw Smith's probation.
As a result of a probation offense, Smith was sentenced to six months imprisonment, his probation was extended an additional 18 months, he was instructed to enter an alcohol rehab program, and wore an alcohol monitoring bracelet 24 hours a day. until the trial period is over.
The University of Illinois announced that Smith was permanently dismissed from the basketball program. Smith arranged with a court official to move to Evansville, Indiana where he completed his ordered rehabilitation, worked at a grocery store, and entered the University of Southern Indiana.
Aftermath
Jamar Smith will come on about his alcohol addiction, a serious mistake in his judgment, and how he was given a second, and third chance, to get his life together. From several reports, Smith, with the help of friends and family, has changed his life. He said that at some point he wanted to travel and talk to young people about his experience. Smith was in touch with many people from his time in Illinois, including former head coach Bruce Weber, his Illinois team mate Chester Frazier and Brian Carlwell, a 19-year-old driver in a car that changed his life.
