John David Hawkins is an experimental lawyer from Spartanburg, South Carolina. He is the owner and runs lawyer Law Firm Hawkins, with locations in Spartanburg, Greenville, and Charleston, South Carolina. The Hawkins Law Firm handles many personal injuries and workers' compensation cases, as well as false deaths and some mass suits.
From 1996 to 2000 he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. His achievements include serving as Legislative Chairman Freshman Caucus and fighting on behalf of the humane treatment of animals and the right of individual privacy.
In 2000 he was elected a Republican member of the South Carolina Senate, representing the 12th District. In 2004 he won re-election by defeating his main challenger, Lee Bright with 31 votes. In 2008 Hawkins did not run for re-election.
In 2012, Hawkins challenged Lee Bright in Republican Republican to District 12 but was defeated due to low turnout and confusion about Supreme Court decisions limiting the number of candidates allowed in the vote.
While serving in the Senate, Hawkins is a hero of humane treatment of animals, earning the American Human Society's Legislator of the Year. He is also recognized for his work on behalf of victims of violent crime. Hawkins is a leading proponent of South Carolina Amendment 1, banning same-sex marriage, passed in a state referendum in 2006. On September 18, 2013, Hawkins rejected this anti-gay law and announced, "I am wrong about poking marriage amendments. wishing I was not so hard on him.
