Early life and education

Mahoney was born in South Bend, while his father attended Notre Dame University Law School. The family moved to Merrillville, Indiana in 1961, when he was in first grade. Mahoney announced at the age of eight that he wanted to be a lawyer like his father, who was a personal injury lawyer.

Mahoney graduated from Merrillville High School in 1972, where he was on the school swim team. Mahoney holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Indiana University and J.D. from the Law Faculty of the University of Chicago, where he is in charge of a school legal review.

Mahoney was the scribe for Judge Robert Sprecher of the United States Court of Appeal for the Seventh Circuit before applying for then-Associate Justice William Rehnquist.

Professional career

Mahoney joins Latham & amp; Watkins in 1980 and remain in the firm for the next 11 years. He later served as Deputy Attorney General in the George H. W. Bush administration, where he was future colleague of US Supreme Court Justice John G. Roberts. In April 1992, President George H. W. Bush nominated him to serve as a US District Court judge for the Eastern District of Virginia, but his candidacy was not acted upon by the Senate before the Bush presidency ended. "It was really the lowest point in my career," he said. "I've never heard of, and there's never a conflict I know, so it's not bad, it's just disappointing."

In 1993, Mahoney reunited with Latham & amp; Watkins.

Mahoney is the sole defense attorney of Joseph Nacchio in the process around alleged insider trading.

Speculation of the Supreme Court

Harriet Miers' withdrawal of his Supreme Court nomination made Mahoney a possible candidate for the Supreme Court in 2005. However, his position in affirmative affairs cases of the University of Michigan raised concerns among conservatives, and he was eventually passed for Samuel Alito. "I've got a dream job, but it's very good to consider," he told the Times of Northwest Indiana.

Mahoney is also touted as a possible Supreme Court candidate in the presidency of John McCain.
