Super Bowl XX is an American soccer match between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Chicago Bears and American Football Conference (AFC) champion New England Patriots to determine the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 1985 season. The bears beat the Patriots by a score of 46-10, capturing their first NFL championship (and Chicago's first overall sporting victory) since 1963, three years before the birth of the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XX was played on January 26, 1986 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

This is the fourth Super Bowl in which both teams are making their Super Bowl debut. The Bears entered the game after becoming the second team in NFL history to win 15 regular season games. With their revolutionary 46 defenses, Chicago led the league in several defensive categories, defeating their opponents with a staggering 456-198 margin, and recorded two post-season finishes. The Patriots were regarded as the Cinderella team during the 1985 season, and set a regular 11-5 season record, but entered the playoffs as wild cards due to the tiebreak. However, with opposing chances, New England recorded three road playoff victories to advance to the Super Bowl XX.

In their victory over the Patriots, the Bears organize or tie a Super Bowl record to a sack (seven), the least allowed mileage (seven), and a winning margin (36 points). At that time, New England broke the record for the fastest lead in the history of the Super Bowl, with 36-yard field goal Tony Franklin 1:19 into the first quarter after Chicago fumbled. But the Patriots were finally held with negative yardage (-19) throughout the entire first half, and finished with only 123 yards from the tussle, the second lowest total yard in Super Bowl history behind Minnesota Vikings (119 total yards) in Super Bowl IX. The final defensive Bears Richard Dent, who has 1.5 quarterback sacks, forced two fumbles, and blocked the pass, named Player Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The show's impressions on NBC were watched by around 92.57 million viewers. To commemorate the 20th Super Bowl, all previous Super Bowl MVPs were honored during the pregame ceremony.

The NFL owner won the Super Bowl XX hosting to New Orleans, Louisiana on December 14, 1982, at a meeting of owners held in Dallas. This is the sixth time that New Orleans is hosting the Super Bowl. The Tulane Stadium is where the Super Bowl IV, VI, and IX; while the Louisiana Superdome previously hosted XII and XV.

In 2016, Super Bowl XX remains the last Super Bowl featuring two teams that first appeared in the game. It was the fourth overall following Super Bowl I, Super Bowl III, and Super Bowl XVI. Any future Super Bowl that will have such a combination must have a Detroit Lions that plays Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, or Jacksonville Jaguars in the game. All 16 NFC teams have played in NFL championship games (Detroit last made an NFL championship game in the pre-merger era); only three AFC franchises have started playing since 1995 (technically from the Browns franchise which is contrary to revisionism meaning this version started in 1999) has not reached the league championship.

The nation's recognition of Bears' achievements was overshadowed by STS 51-L two days later, an event that led to the cancellation of the White House post-Super Bowl visit. Jim McMahon drew the controversy after Super Bowl XXXI by wearing the Bears jersey for a Green Bay Packers visit following their championship, as his first official visit never happened at the time. Twenty-five years after the championship, surviving team members will be invited to the White House in 2011 by President Barack Obama.

Chicago Bears

Under head coach Mike Ditka, who won the 1985 NFL Coach of the Year Award, the Bears went 15-1 in the regular season, becoming the second NFL team to win 15 regular-season games while defeating their opponents by a staggering 456 -198.

The Defense Bears, "defense 46", allows the fewest points (198), the least total yard (4,135), and at least the bustle of any team during the regular season (1.319). They also led the league in interception (34) and ranked third in the sack (64).

Pro Bowl Quarterback Jim McMahon provided the team with a solid bait attack, throwing for 2,392 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also rushing for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Walter Payton, who at the time was the all time NFL leader with 14,860 yards, rushed 1,551 yards. He also caught 49 passes for 500 yards, and scored 11 goals. Linebacker Mike Singletary won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award by recording three sacks, three misplaced remedies, and one interception.

But one of the most distinguishable players in defense was a great rookie midfielder named William "The Refrigerator" Perry. Perry came to the training camp before the season weighing more than 380 pounds. But after Bears coordinator Buddy Ryan told the press that the team "wasted" their first round of designs, Perry lost weight and eventually became an effective defensive tactic, finishing the season with 5 sacks. He got more attention when Ditka started putting him in the game in fullback position during offensive play near the opponent's goal line. During the regular season, Perry rushes for 2 goals, catches feedback for another touchdown, and often leads the blocker to Payton during a goal-line play.

The Bears "46 defense" also has the following impact players: On the defensive line, Pro Bowler and Hall of Fame Richard Dent lead the NFL in the sack by 17, while Pro Bowler and Hall of Famer Dan Hampton next record 6.5 sacks, and the nose tackle Steve McMichael composed 8. In addition to Singletary, Otis Wilson linebacker has 10.5 sacks and 3 interception, while Wilber Marshall records 4 interceptions. In the secondary, back defensive Leslie Frazier has 6 interceptions, Mike Richardson notes 4 interceptions, Dave Duerson has 5 interceptions, and Gary Fencik records 5 interceptions and 118 tackles.

Chicago's main offensive weapons are Payton and the run. The big reason for Payton's success was defender Matt Suhey as the main lead scorer. Suhey is also a good footballer, rushing for 471 yards and catching 33 tracks for 295 yards. Relax team also assisted by Pro Bowlers Jim Covert and Jay Hilgenberg and the rest of the Bears offensive line.

In their passing game, the Bears' deep threat is the wide receiver of Willie Gault, who captures 33 tracks for 704 yards, averages 21.3 yards per catch, and returns 22 matches for 557 yards and touchdowns. Emery Moorehead's ultimate tighter is another key contributor, capturing 35 tracks for 481 meters. The wide receiver Dennis McKinnon is another crossing weapon, recording 31 receptions, 555 yards, and 7 touchdowns. In special teams, Kevin Butler set a newcomer scoring record with 144 points, making 31 of 37 field goals (83%) and 51 of 51 additional points.

Meanwhile, the players brought their characterization to the national stage with "The Super Bowl Shuffle", a rap song the Bears recorded during the season. Although basically this is a new song, it actually reached # 41 on the Billboard charts and received a Grammy nomination for R & amp; B best by a group.

New England Patriots

The Patriots were a Cinderella team during the 1985 season because many sports writers and fans thought they were lucky to make the playoffs altogether. New England started the season with a loss of three of their first five games, but won six games in a row to finish with an 11-5 record. However, the 11-5 figure only gives them third place in AFC East behind the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

Quarterback Tony Eason, in his third year at the NFL, was inconsistent during the regular season, finishing 168 of 299 passes for 2,156 yards and 11 touchdowns but 17 interceptions. His backup, Steve Grogan, is considered to be one of the best quarterback reserves in the league. Grogan is the sixth match in the Patriots match, and completes the regular season with 85 of 156 completions for 1,311 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interception.

The broad receiver Stanley Morgan provides the team with a deep threat, catching 39 passes for 760 yards and 5 goals. On the other side of the field, the multi-talented wide receiver Irving Fryar is equally effective, catching 39 trajectories for 670 yards, while also rushing for 27 yards, getting 559 yards back punts and kickoffs, and scoring 10 goals. But like Bear, the main strength of the Patriots on offense is their rushed attack. Halfback Craig James rushed for 1,227 yards, caught 27 tickets for 370 yards, and scored 7 goals. Fullback Tony Collins rushed for 657 yards, recorded 52 team receptions for 549 yards, and scored 5 goals. Patriots also have an incredible offensive line, led by Pro Bowl tackling Brian Holloway and future Hall of Fame guard John Hannah.

The New England defense was ranked 5th in the league in a few yards allowed (5,048). Linebacker Pro Bowl Andre Tippett led the AFC with 16.5 sacks and recovered 3 mistakes. Linebacker Pro Bowl, Steve Nelson, is also a great defensive weapon, very proficient in terms of coverage and running stops. Also, the Patriots' secondary only gives 14 goals passes during the season, at least second in the league. Pro Bowl defender Raymond Clayborn recorded 6 interceptions for 80 yards back and 1 touchdown, while Pro Bowler Fred Marion did 7 interception for 189 yards back.

Playoffs

In the playoffs, Patriot qualifies as the second wild AFC card.

But the Patriots, under head coach Raymond Berry, challenge chances, beat New York Jets 26-14, Los Angeles Raiders 27-20, and Dolphins 31-14 - all on the way - to make it to the Super Bowl. The win against Miami is staggering, not only because Miami are the only team to beat Chicago this season but also because New England have not won at the Orange Bowl (Miami home-season) since 1966, the Dolphins' first season (later in AFL). The Patriots have lost to Miami there 18 times in a row, including a 30-27 defeat in their 15th game of the season. But New England dominated the Dolphins in the AFC Championship Match, recording two interceptions from Dan Marino's quarterback and recovering 4 fumbles. New England remain the only team that occupies the third position in their division and qualify for the Super Bowl in the same season.

Meanwhile, Bears became the first and only team in NFL history to seal both their opponents in the playoffs, beating New York Giants 21-0 and Los Angeles Rams 24-0.

Super Bowl pregame hype

Most of the Super hype pregame centered on Bears Jim McMahon midfielder. First, he was fined by the NFL during the playoffs for breaking the league's dress code, wearing a head band from Adidas. He then began to wear the head band in which he wrote the hand of "Rozelle", after the then league commissioner, Pete Rozelle.

McMahon suffered a tense glute as a result of a hit taken in the NFC Championship Game and flew his acupuncturist to New Orleans for treatment. During a four-day exercise before the Super Bowl, she wore a headband bearing the words "Acupuncture". During Bear practice before the Super Bowl, McMahon floated a helicopter that hovered over the exercise.

Another anecdote involving McMahon during the Super Bowl anticipation involving WDSU sports anchor Buddy Diliberto reported a quote attributed to McMahon, where he allegedly referred to New Orleans women as "prostitutes" at local morning sports talk shows. This caused great controversy among the women in New Orleans and McMahon began to receive calls from angry fans at his hotel. The nervous McMahon, who could not sleep well because of all the calls he got, was confronted by Mike Ditka that morning and denied making a statement, saying he would not even wake up to make a comment when he was said to have done it. He is supported in his claim by WLS reporter Les Grobstein, who was present when the alleged statement was made. WDSU would then withdraw the statement, apologizing in the air read by the station's general manager during the afternoon newscast on January 23rd; and suspended Diliberto for a while.

Super Bowl Golf

The suburban Village of Frankfort has hosted the annual Super Bowl Sunday golf event for over 30 years starting in the morning on Super Bowl XX. The tradition began when two neighbors Alan Heath and Bill Holley broke the local golf course to ease their tensions before the game. The first outing lasted 14 holes in the snow with a hovering temperature of about 9 degrees.

In the aftermath of the Super Bowl Bear victory, the two make an agreement that they will return to the golf course every year until Bear is repeated as the Super Bowl Champions. With the 1985 squad's dominance this couple's bears did not think they would start a strong local tradition 30 years later.

Sightseeing has been going on every year in all types of weather and will continue every year until Repeat Repeat as Champions. Depending on the weather, its presence ranges from 2 & amp; 20 people every year.

Broadcasting

NBC's broadcast of the game, with play-by-play broadcaster Dick Enberg and color commentator Merlin Olsen and Bob Griese (who were not at the booth with Enberg and Olsen), garnered the third highest Nielsen rating of any Super Bowl to date, 48.3 but eventually became the first Super Bowl to garner more than 90 million viewers to date until then. While Dick Enberg, Merlin Olsen, and Bob Griese mentioned the game, Bob Costas and his colleagues at NFL '85, Ahmad Rashad and Pete Axthelm installed pregame, part time and postgame. Other contributors include Charlie Jones (Super Bowl I) and Bill Macatee. Also, pregame coverage includes what is known as "the silent minute"; 60 seconds countdown on a black screen (a concept created by former NBC Sports executive Michael Weisman); a comedy featuring comedians Rodney Dangerfield and an interview by NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw of United States President Ronald Reagan at the White House (this will not be a regular Super Bowl pregame feature until Super Bowl XLIII; when < i> Today show host Matt Lauer interviewed US President Barack Obama).

The Last Precinct debuted on NBC after the game.

Super Bowl XX is broadcast in Canada on CTV and broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK.

Super Bowl XX is featured on NFL Best Games under the title of Super Bears with narration by Don LaFontaine.

The national radio broadcast was broadcast by NBC Radio, which beat Radio CBS for a national NFL contract in March 1985. Don Criqui is a play-by-play announcer, with Bob Trumpy anlayst color. WGN-AM carries the game in the Chicago area (and thanks to the clear-channel signal of 50,000 watts of WGN, to most continents of the United States), with Wayne Larrivee playing-by-play, and Jim Hart and Dick Butkus commenting. WEEI brought the game in the Boston area, with John Carlson and Jon Morris on the call.

Entertainment

This is the first year that the NFL itself applies pregame entertainment. The pregame entertainment event starts after the players leave the field and ends with a kick-off. Lesslee Fitzmorris made and directed the show. To celebrate the 20th Super Bowl game, the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl was previously featured during the pregame celebration. The number one song of the year coupled with video playback from each Super Bowl was accompanied by presentations from each player. The offender scores every championship game. The event concludes with questions about who will become the next Super Bowl champion. It will start a tradition that happens every ten years (in Super Bowl XXX, XL, and 50) where the past Super Bowl MVP will be honored before the game.

After the trumpet player Wynton Marsalis performed the national anthem, Bart Starr, Super Bowl MVP I and Super Bowl II, throwing coins.

Up with People show group performs during the show "Beat of the Future". Up with People dancer illustrates various scenes in the future. This is the last Super Bowl featuring Up with People as a part-time show, although they later appeared on Super Bowl XXV pre-show. The part-time show is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Martin Luther King Jr. Day's first celebration had been held the previous Monday).

Game summary

First quarter

The Patriots took the fastest lead in Super Bowl history after midfielder Larry McGrew recovered from Walter Payton on the 19-yard line of Chicago in the second game of the game (the Bears themselves would break this record at Super Bowl XLI when Devin Hester ran back opening opening for touchdown). Bear quarterback Jim McMahon took responsibility for groping this after the game, saying he had called wrong play. This set a 36-yard field goal of Tony Franklin 1:19 into the first quarter after three incomplete bait by Tony Eason (the first begins Lin Dawson's tight end down with a torn ligament on his knee). "I looked at the message board," said Chicago midfielder Mike Singletary, "and said that 15 of the 19 teams who scored the first goal won the game I think, yes, but none of the 15 ever played the Bear." Chicago countered with a 7-play, 59-yard drive, showing a 43-yard finish from McMahon to wide receiver Willie Gault, to set up field goals from Kevin Butler, tying the score at 3-3.

After both teams traded punts, Richard Dent and linebacker Wilber Marshall shared a sack with Eason, forcing him to fumble that the Dan Hampton midfielder recovered in the 13-yard Patriots line. Chicago then drove into the 3-yard line but had to settle for another field goal from Butler after rookie defensive midfielder William Perry's "The Refrigerator" (and technically fired) for losing 1 yard while trying to throw his first NFL pass on halfback play. On the Patriots' next drive, Dent was forced to run back Craig James to fumble, discovered by Singletary on the 13-yard line. Two dramas later, Bear defender Matt Suhey scored on an 11-yard touchdown run to boost the lead to 13-3.

New England takes the next kickoff and runs one game before the first quarter ends, which produces a positive strike for the first time in the game (3-yard run by James).

Second quarter

After an incomplete pass and a 4-yard loss, the Patriots have to send punter Rich Camarillo again, and the recipient Keith Ortego returns the ball as far as 12 yards to the 41-yard line. The Bears then drove 59 yards in 10 dramas, featuring a 24-yard reception by Suhey, to score on a 2-yard touchdown McMahon to boost their lead, 20-3. After the next kickoff, New England lost 13 yards in 3 matches and had to kick the ball again but got the ball back with a great field position when tough defender Raymond Clayborn recovered from Suhey in their own 46 yard line. On the kick, Ortego forgot what the game played for the return of the ball, and the ensuing chaos made him punished for running after a fair haul and team mate Leslie Frazier suffered a knee injury, ending his career.

Patriot head coach Raymond Berry then replaced Eason with Steve Grogan, who had spent the previous week hoping he would have a chance to step onto the NFL's biggest stage. "I probably will not get a chance", he told reporters just days before the game. "I just wish I could find a way to get on the field.I can get into the punt-block team and stand behind the line and wave my hand, or something." But on his first drive, Grogan could only lead them to the 37-yard line, and they decided to punt the ball rather than risk a 55-yard field goal effort. The Bears then lined up 72 yards in 11 dramas, transferring the ball inside the 10-yard line of Patriots. New England got them out of the final zone but Butler kicked his third field goal in the last half of the first half to give Chicago a 23-3 lead in the first half.

The end of the first half was controversial. With 21 seconds remaining, McMahon rushed to the 3-yard line of Patriots and stopped inbounds. With the clock ticking, players from both teams battle, and the Bears are forced to take the ball before officials officially return it into the game, allowing McMahon to throw the ball out of bounds and stop the clock with three seconds left. The Bears were sentenced to five yards for the postponement of the match, but according to the NFL rules, 10 seconds should have also run away from the clock during such an attempt to stop the intentional hour in the last two minutes and a half. In addition, a flag must be cast due to a fight (also in accordance with NFL rules). This will likely result in an offset penalty, which will still allow field goal effort. Meanwhile, non-calls on the illegal snap were immediately recognized by officials and reported by NBC sportscasters during the break, but the result was three points not taken from Bear (for example, the NFL instructed officials to strictly enforce a run-off rule of 10 seconds at the start of the 1986 season).

The Bears had dominated New England in the first half, holding them to 21 offensive matches (only four of which produced a positive string) -19 total ofensive yards, two pass completions, one first down, and 3 points. While Eason is in the game, the total is six treasures, one game with a positive string of 15 plays, no first duel, 3 points, 3 punts, 2 turnover, no graduation pass, and -36 yard total offense. Meanwhile, Chicago climbed 236 yards and scored 23 points.

Third quarter

After the Patriots received a second-half kickoff, they managed to get the first down one, but then had to pat after Grogan was fired twice. Camarillo, who punted four times in the first half, managed to pin the Bears back into their own 4-yard line with a record of the Super Bowl at that time of 62 yards. But the Patriots defense still lacks the ability to stop the Chicago attack. In their first game, McMahon forged a handoff into Payton, then threw a 60-yard into the Gault. Eight later dramas, McMahon completed a record of Super Bowl-a 96-yard record with a 1-yard touchdown run to boost the Bears lead to 30-3. On New England's second drive this quarter, Chicago cornerback Reggie Phillips (who replaced Frazier) cut the bait from Grogan and returned it 28 yards for the touchdown to boost the advantage to 37-3.

In the second game of subsequent ownership, Patriots flipped the ball again, when Cedric Jones's receiver quickly lost after grabbing a 19-yard bait from Grogan, and Wilber Marshall returned a thumping 13 yards to a 37-yard New England line. Several dramas later, McMahon's 27-yard settlement for Dennis Gentry receiver moved the ball to the 1-yard line, setting up perhaps the most memorable moments of the game. William "The Refrigerator" Perry was brought in to score for a foul, as he has done twice in the regular season. His touch (while running past Patriot midfielder Larry McGrew in the process) made it 44-3. 21 points Bears in the third quarter is still a record for scoring the most points in that period.

Perry surprise touchdown Las Vegas sports book cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses from prop bets.

Fourth quarter

The Patriots finally scored a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter, progressing the 76-meter ball in 12 dramas and scoring on a 8-yard fourth-down pass from Grogan to receiver Irving Fryar. But the Bears' defense dominated New England for the rest of the game, forcing another misses, another interception, and defensive midfielder Henry Waechter at Grogan in the final zone for safety to make the final score 46-10.

One oddity in the Bears victory was Walter Payton had a relatively poor performance in running the ball and never scored in Super Bowl XX, his only appearance in the Super Bowl during his Hall of Fame career. Many people including Mike Ditka claim that the reason for this is due to the fact that the Patriots' defense scheme is centered on stopping Payton. Although Payton eventually became the leading rusher of the Bears during the match, the Patriots defense held him only 61 yards on 22 carry, with the longest run of just 7 yards. He was given several chances to score near the goal line, but New England stopped him every time before reaching the end zone (like losing 2 yards from several New England 3-yard drama lines before the second Butler field goal, and a 2-yard run from line 4 -yard just before McMahon's first hurried touchdown). Thus, Chicago's head coach Mike Ditka chose to go play another game against the Patriots defense. Ditka has since declared that his biggest regret in his career has not created a goal-scoring opportunity for Payton during the game.

McMahon, who finished 12 of 20 passes for 256 yards, became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl to score 2 hurried goals. Bears receiver Willie Gault completed the game with 129 receiving yard for only 4 receptions, averaging 32.3 yards per catch. He also returned 4 games for 49 yards. Suhey has 11 cars for 52 yards and a touchdown, and catches the bait for 24 yards. Singletary tied Super Bowl record with 2 times recovery.

Eason became the initial quarterback of the Super Bowl to fail to finish the bait, going from 0 to 6 experiments. Grogan completed 17 of 30 passes for 177 yards and 1 goal, with 2 interception. Although Tony Collins 'fullback is the Patriots' leading rusher, he is limited to only 4 yards on the 3rd carry, and captures 2 tickets for 19 yards. New England receiver Stephen Starring returned 7 matches for 153 yards and caught 2 passes for 39 yards. The Patriot, as a team, only recorded 123 yards of total offensive, the second-lowest total in Super Bowl history.
