Plot

After his girlfriend, Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin) sued his former employer, Dunder Mifflin, for a false job termination, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) found himself forced by Jan to be a witness against his employer. Ryan Howard (B. J. Novak) wants to make sure Michael will not say anything to hurt Dunder Mifflin even though Michael is Jan's boyfriend. Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein) was present as HR's representative, against Michael's protest. The deposition went well for Jan at first, as he claimed that he was stopped because of discrimination over breast enlargement. To counteract evidence that he had a romantic relationship with Michael before they revealed it to the company, Jan filed a personal diary of Michael, which he brought to deposition without his knowledge or permission. Michael gets angry with Jan when he learns that he gave him a sharp performance review after they started dating, claiming that he is not worthy for his current position and should be downgraded to sales. Michael learns he never became a competitor when interviewing for the former position of Jan in the corporate office, with the CFO insisting repeatedly that he is a good man, but ultimately unsuited to that position. Michael still defends the company, and then states that "You expect to be confused by your company, but you never expect to be confused by your girlfriend." Jan and Michael return home, obviously angry with each other over the events of the day.

Back in Scranton, the branch of Pennsylvania Dunder Mifflin, Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) has repeatedly lost the Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson) foreman's warehouse in ping pong, pushing Darryl's girlfriend, Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling) to laugh at Jim Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) over his girlfriend's superior skills. Unable to tolerate Kelly's rubbish, Pam built a makeshift ping-pong table in the conference room for Jim to train against other office employees. Throughout the day, Jim practiced against his co-workers, finally finding the greatness of Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) in the game. When Jim and Darryl did a rematch, Jim again lost to Darryl. Disgusted by continuing to mock Kelly, Pam challenges him to the ping pong game, but both play badly. Jim and Darryl quickly bored watching them and decided to play ping pong in the conference room. This episode concludes with Dwight playing a high-intensity pingpong game against his cousin, Mose Schrute (Michael Schur), with both in a dead end.

Production

"The Deposition" is the first episode of The Office written by Lester Lewis. Lewis also works for the show as a consulting producer. The episode was the second of the show directed by Julian Farino. Farino also directed the third season episode of "Returning from Vacation". "The Deposition" was the last original episode of The Office to air in 2007 due to the effects of the 2007-2008 Guild Writers strike. Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike at 12:01 am Eastern Standard Time on November 5, 2007. Filming Office was immediately terminated on that date, as Steve Carell, a member of WGA, refused crossed the WGA picket line. Writer members Guild of America, East and Writers Guild of America, West voted to end the 100 day strike on 12 February 2008. The author was allowed to return to work on the same day. WGA allows to show runners to return to work on February 11, in preparation for the conclusion of the strike. The event runner for Office , Executive Producer Greg Daniels, returned on February 11, while the show's author returned to work on 13 February. Office finally returned with the original episode on April 10, 2008, with the episode "Dinner Party".

Executive producer and performance runner Greg Daniels stated that one of the main goals of "The Deposition" is to add tension between Michael and Jan. This tension will eventually end the buildup with the split of Michael and Jan in the episode of "Dinner Party". The scene where Michael pushed Toby's lunch tray from the table was not written. The crew did one last shot of the scene and actor Paul Lieberstein suggested that Steve Carell push his food off the table. The ping pong game between Dwight and Mose is created using Computer generated imagery. Rainn Wilson and Michael Schur mimicked the ping pong action, and during the editing and post-production stages the ping pong ball was added as an effect.
