Timothy Scott Couch (born July 31, 1977) is a former American football quarterback playing five seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Kentucky and won an All-America award. He was chosen first overall by Cleveland Browns which was reactivated in the 1999 NFL Draft.

The sofa threw for more than 11,000 yards over the course of the NFL career and helped Browns qualify for the postseason for the first time since they returned to the NFL as an expansion team, but he could not duplicate his college successes, and his playing career ended after five injury-hit seasons. He is sometimes considered one of the greatest design statues in NFL history.

Initial years

Sofa was born in Hyden, Kentucky. As a preparation quarterback at Leslie County High School in Leslie County, he set a number of high school records: mostly graduating (872), passing yardage (12,104), touchdown pass (132), and passing percentage for one season (75.1). After his senior season in 1995, he was the recipient of the "Mr. Football" Kentucky award. ESPN put Couch as the sixth best high school athlete ever. The sofa also stars the university basketball team of Leslie County High School. He scored 36 points per game as junior, which is the highest average in the state. Couch completed his high school career with 3,023 points.

College career

Couch attended the University of Kentucky, where he played for the Kentucky Wildcats football team from 1996 to 1998. During 1996 under student head coach Bill Curry, he divided his time as an early quarterback with Billy Jack Haskins. Curry was fired after the opening 1-6 of the season, and substitute Hal Mumme announced early on that Couch would be a starter in a fresh air attack-oriented air attack. In 1997, Couch assigned some school records for an earlier anemic Kentucky offense to a national offensive rank and finished 5-6 this season, including a victory over # 20 Alabama. During the 1998 season, Couch led Kentucky with seven wins (including a win on the road at # 21 LSU) and a place in the Outback Bowl (where Couch completed 30 of 48 tickets for 336 yards and two goals, though Kentucky lost Penn State 26-14). After his junior season in 1998, Couch announced he would leave Kentucky to enter the original NFL Draft.

Total Couch career in Kentucky included completing 795 of 1,184 passes (0.671 completion rate) for 8,435 meters (including 4,275 passing feet during the 1998 season only) and 74 goals (including a 97 yard touchdown pass to Craig Yeast against Florida on September 26, 1998 ). The sofa still holds the NCAA record for the percentage of completion in one game (minimum 40 settlements) at 83.0% against Vanderbilt (44 of 53) in 1998 and for completion per game (36.4, 400 in 11 games) in the same season. He also left Kentucky holding NCAA records for most of the settlements in a season (400 in 1998), most of the completion in a two-year period (793 in 1997-1998), most settlements per game in a two-year period (34.7, 1997 - 1998) and career completion percentage (67.1%). His record in 1998 was 4,151 yards offensive in a season standing for nine years as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) record to Florida quarterback Tim Tebow broke it by 4,181 yards in 2007. By 2016, his record in 1998 of 4,275 yards is still SEC. record.

Professional career

Couch's college success culminated in his election as the overall number one choice in the NFL draft by Cleveland Browns, who returned to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999 after relocating the original team in 1996 to Baltimore. Couch took over for Ty Detmer as the team's early quarterback in the second game of his rookie season. He spent five seasons as an early quarterback for Cleveland, eventually facing competition from reserve explorer Kelly Holcomb during his last two seasons.

The Couch tenure in Cleveland ranges from leading the team to playoff appearances, to boos and inconsistent games, partly due to continuous injuries. Couch's term of office with the team often includes playing behind offensive lines that are hampered by injuries. He missed the last nine games of the 2000 season with a broken thumb. Couch's career high point came in 2002, when he threw for 2,842 yards and 18 goals in a Browns beginner's lead to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance. However, he suffered a broken leg in the last game of the regular season and was forced to watch as Holcomb threw over 400 yards due to a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. This was the start of a quarterback controversy in Cleveland that would not be completed until a year later when head coach Butch Davis tapped Holcomb as his starter. At the end of the 2003 season, after exhausting both quarterbacks with rotation, it became clear that Davis, struggling with the 5-11 football team, would not give Couch a chance to start again. The Sofa is considered by Fox Sports to be one of the biggest NFL draft statues in its history after being taken # 1 with high hopes only to waver through most of his career. However, Couch's career has also been defended by former offensive coordinator Brown Bruce Arians.

moment and important achievement

Hail Mary goes through

The sofa has several important moments for Browns, including two "Hail Mary". In 1999 against the New Orleans Saints, his last second touchdown qualified for Kevin Johnson gave Browns their first win. Three seasons later, in Jacksonville he threw a bait victory in the final game of the game to Quincy Morgan. Couch holds the distinction of being the only quarterback in NFL history to throw two red cards that win in matches of 50 yards or more with the remaining time of 0:00.

season 2002

The Browns 2002 campaign is special. Although the 2001 Browns raised eyebrows with their defense, having recorded 43 sacks and 33 best league interception, the offense was once again almost dead. The running game was pathetic and the offensive line was porous. In early preseason 2002, Liner's star linebacker Miller dropped with an Achilles tendon-career end injury. However, reincarnated "Kardiac Kids", led by Couch, won 9 matches, including five at the end of two minutes and seven with 10 points or less, and set up a wildcard playoff spot. The thriller included a 31-28 overtime win over Tennessee where Couch threw for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns, last-minute touchdowns and a two-point escaping conversion from Couch to Dennis Northcutt against the Jets, "Hail Mary" against Jaguar, and a final-minute drive Baltimore where Couch threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to the tight end of Mark Campbell after being pinned inside his own 5-yard line with 0 timeout and 1:30 remaining in the rules.

Ratings all the time

Sofa is the all-time Browns leader in percentage completion graduation at 59.8%. He also ranks 7 all the time on touchdowns passes (64), 6 in QB rating (75.1), 4 in passing attempts (1.741), 3 in completion (1.025), 5 in passing meter (11.131). Couch still holds the record for single-game franchises to complete the pass (36 against Tennessee in 2002) and rookie single-season records to get through touchdown (15). His rookie records for the passing experiments (399), graduating (223), passing the yard (2,447), and the QB rating (73.2) broken by Colt McCoy in 2010 and Brandon Weeden in 2012. He was the leading survivor from 1999 to 2002.

Awards and honor

  • NFL Rookie of the Month (October, 1999)
  • AFC Offensive Player of the Week (9/22/02)

Attempt comeback

After Browns released Couch in 2004, Couch signed a contract as a free agent with Green Bay Packers. Couch went on to have a disappointing training camp, and was scorned by Field Lambeau crowd during a limited preseason appearance. The sofa is struggling with a rotator cuff injury, which will eventually require surgery, and is absent throughout the year.

Sofa was released by the Packers during their last cut to 53 players before the season. Couch filed a complaint with the NFL Player Union against the Packers because they failed to try an injury settlement before his release.

After undergoing shoulder surgery in February 2005, Couch auditioned for Chicago Bears in mid-2005 and Cincinnati Bengals in December 2005. The Bears observed that his arm did not return to the NFL form during their practice and did not sign him. Bengals did not pursue Couch, though Jon Kitna was not re-signed after his contract expired in early 2006.

Couch participated in a trial with Tennessee Titans in January 2006. He also did exercises with Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Texans. The three teams stated that despite good practice, they were not interested in chasing him. The sofa eventually disappeared throughout the 2006 season due to another shoulder surgery, the end of June 2006.

ESPN reported on July 20, 2007, that Couch had contacted all 32 NFL teams to see if any teams were interested in him for the 2007-2008 season. On July 29, 2007, Couch agreed a two-year contract with Jacksonville Jaguars.

The couch was brought in to compete for the third quarterback string position with Quinn Gray and Lester Ricard. He played in one pre-season game against Miami Dolphins and 2-of-4 for 11 yards. On August 18, Couch failed to create a third string and was released. The following week, Jaguars released former starters Byron Leftwich and Lester Ricard, leaving them without a third-string quarterback.
