MedStar National Rehabilitation Network (MedStar NRH) is located in Washington, DC, and specializes in treating people with physical disabilities, including spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, arthritis, amputations, multiple sclerosis, post-syndrome polio, orthopedics, and other neurological conditions. National Rehabilitation Hospital was founded in 1986 by Edward A. Eckenhoff, and is a member of the MedStar Health system, the largest non-profit health care organization in Washington, D.C.-Baltimore.

MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital has grown from one hospital to MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, which provides inpatient, outpatient, and day care programs. The network provides more than 350,000 outpatient visits annually in addition to more than 2,200 hospitalized patients. From the beginning, MedStar NRH has recognized over 35,000 inpatients and provided more than 2 million outpatient visits.

Histori

Edward A. Eckenhoff

Established the hospital in 1986 and is currently President Emeritus MedStar NRH. Suffering a spinal injury in college, Edward A. Eckenhoff, was fought behind the construction of the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Eckenhoff was only 20 when he became paralyzed and continued to impact thousands of lives through his actions.

On February 6, 1986, MedStar NRH opened its doors with 230 staff members and one patient. MedStar NRH soon grew to become one of the best known hospitals in the country. It has hosted guests such as Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Queen Sofia of Spain, Bob Dole, and Stevie Wonder.

Eckenhoff also received many awards including "Washingtonian of the year" by Washingtonian magazine and was named "Alumnus of the Year" by Washington University School of Medicine. Eckenhoff played a leading role in bequeathing America with the Disabilities Act of 1990 with his visit to Capitol Hill and working around the community. MedStar NRH strongly supports Eckenhoff's efforts and is an important part of improving the lives of the disabled. The current president is John Rockwood who adopted the role in October 2010.

Physicians across the country consistently rated MedStar NRH among "America's Best Hospitals," as reported by the U.S. News & amp; World Report. Since 1990, MedStar NRH has been consistently listed in the annual rankings as one of the best hospitals in the country for physical rehabilitation.

MedStar NRH is fully accredited by the JCAHO JCAHO Accreditation Commission Accreditation Commission, and the CARF Rehabilitation Facility Accreditation Commission, generating 14 impressive CARF praises in the 2007 accreditation survey. CARF is a private, non-profit organization that promotes quality rehabilitation services. Their standards are reviewed annually and newly developed to keep pace with changing current consumer conditions and needs. NRH has received a three-year accreditation from CARF, and its Spinal Injury, Stroke, and Brain Injury program is the only CARF-accredited specialty program.

Special Types of Care: Inpatient, Outpatient, and Day Treatment

Doctors certified medStar NRH, neuropsychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and other doctors work in teams to meet the needs of patients with various neurological, and orthopedic conditions. MedStar NRH provides special highly specialized acute care rehabilitation at the Washington, D.C. site, on campus adjacent to MedStar Health nursing hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center. NRH works in partnership not only with the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, but also with a number of other leading acute care facilities throughout the region. Acute rehabilitation begins early in injury and illness, and continues after hospitalization through the NRH Rehabilitation Network - with over 50 outpatient sites located throughout Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland.

In addition, for those requiring more intensive therapy after hospitalization, MedStar NRH offers a unique Day Care program for stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, which provides advanced comprehensive care to maximize recovery potential.

Vocational Care

Intended for patients who have experienced brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, and burns. The program has also been accredited to treat impaired motion, arthritis, chronic pain syndrome, cardiac disorders, and other neurological conditions. There are inpatient and outpatient services available with every staff member certified in rehabilitation counseling (CRC).

Spinal Nerve Injury

More than 200 patients with spinal cord injuries come to MedStar NRH each year for treatment. Some of the Medcourse NRH injury encounters are Spinal Cord Disease, Spinal Stenosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Postoperative Spinal Surgery, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. Emphasis is on the prevention of primary and secondary conditions and on patient participation. The Seating Clinic and Mobility offer an evaluation for the patient's need for wheeled mobility based on functional strength, range of motion, postural alignment, and skin integrity. MedStar NRH is also one of the country's first hospitals to use Lokomat. It provides weight support for gait training.

Brain Injury

The faculty provides care for thousands of people suffering from mild to traumatic brain injuries. The concussion clinic at Medstar NRH focuses primarily on brain injury forms and is considered one of the best in the country according to US News & World Report. 75 percent of all traumatic brain injuries that occur are concussions. Traumatic brain injury contributes to one third of all deaths in the United States with more than 1.5 million brain injuries occurring each year. During their stay, patients are also educated about the precautions they can take to prevent future events.

Stroke

Take care of inpatient and outpatient stroke. With over 800,000 stroke victims annually, MedStar NRH has developed one of the largest stroke programs in the region. More than 600 stroke patients are treated annually at MedStar NRH with 96 percent able to return home within 90 days. The stroke recovery program is aimed at offering comprehensive stroke inpatient care, daytime care and outpatient rehabilitation tailored to the needs and abilities of each patient.

Created when the hospital opened in 1986, the Victory Award honors individuals who have overcome physical difficulties and inspired others. The awards have been given to people from different fields such as art, entertainment, sports, and politics. The event also raises money to advance care and hospitals.

25th anniversary

In 2011, MedStar NRH celebrated their 25th anniversary with their annual Gala Victory award in which they recognized several major contributors to the progress of rehab.

MedStar NRH has been accredited by The Joint Commission and CARF as one of the most reliable rehabilitation hospitals in the country. They are the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facility. CARF Accredited Medstar NRH with Special Programs in Stroke Recovery, Injury Spine Injury and Brain Injury.

Custom Program

CARF Accredited

MedStar NRH's Spinal Cord Program is the only CARF Accreditation Special Program for Spinal Nerve Injury and Illness.

The Center for Rehabilitation Research and Training (RRTC) on Spinal Injuries (SCI): Promoting Health and Preventing Complications through Exercise is also funded by NIDRR. The $ 4 million, 5-year grant allows MedStar NRH to further expand its research and training efforts on secondary conditions in people with SCI. The RRTC is a unique collaborative effort of national leaders in SCI-related research, clinical expertise, support and education organizations, independent living centers, and consumers with SCI.

Recovery Program

The MedRtar NRH Stroke Recovery Program is one of the largest programs in the country. Patients MedStar NRH only get the only CARF Accreditation Special Program for Strokes.

MedStar NRH Brain Injury Program uses repetition to expand small additional gain in recovery - to achieve their results.

The orthopedic program at MedStar NRH uses diagnostic and therapeutic technology equipment to overcome problems such as arthritis, amputation, joint replacement, and various other injuries and orthopedic conditions.

Research and technology

Advanced rehabilitation technologies such as G/G force gage training and Al gravity treadmill Alter/G have earned the reputation MedStar NRH as one of the leading participants in research for rehabilitation technology.

Christoph Ruesch Research Center

Christoph Ruesch Research Center at MedStar NRH is dedicated to implementing initiatives that investigate new rehabilitation interventions to address the health and rehabilitation needs of people with disabilities, and to develop better ways to deliver and pay for these services.

There are four unique centers conducting laboratory and clinical research: Bantu Technology Research Center, Center for Post-Acute Studies, Neuroscience Research Center, and Center for Applied Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Research.

Dozens of studies are underway in the development of better rehabilitation diagnoses and treatment methods, and technologies aimed at improving long-term independence for people with multiple conditions of deactivation. Among these are the unique studies to evaluate the value of activity-based rehabilitation and FES, functional electrical stimulation, for spinal injury patients, projects to test the patient's navigational value to improve long-term outcomes for stroke and spinal cord patients, and programs to reduce secondary incidence in between stroke patients in the capital region.
