Training and early career (2000-2001)
Orton made his wrestling debut in 2000 at the Wrestling Midwest Conference of the Missouri-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling (MMWA-SICW) in St. Louis. Louis, Missouri, branch of St. The historic Louis Wrestling Club led by Sam Muchnick. There, he was trained by both promotions and his father, Bob Orton Jr. He wrestled for promotion for a month, where he performed with wrestlers such as Ace Strange and Mark Bland. Orton also requires several matches with World Organized Wrestling, a promotion in which his uncle Barry Orton works.
In 2001, Orton signed an agreement with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and was sent to its development area, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in Louisville, Kentucky, where he continued his training. During his time at OVW, Orton wrestled with the likes of Rico Constantino and The Prototype and teamed up with Bobby Eaton during the tag team title tournament. He won the OCW Hardcore Championship twice by defeating Mr. Black on February 14, 2001, and Flash Flanagan on May 5, 2001, respectively. On several occasions he faces Rico Constantino at the WWF/OVW joint event, and also loses to The Prototype (John Cena) in a tag match on July 28 in Jacksonville, Indiana. He also began appearing at several WWF home events not affiliated with OVW, the first on May 1, 2001 when he faced Billy Gunn. After taking the mic and promising to defeat Gunn, Orton is defeated. That fall he began appearing regularly at WWF's home events and dark matches, facing Chuck Palumbo, Steven Richards, and Shawn Stasiak, but mostly grappling in a tag team match.
Evolution (2002-2004)
One of Orton's first official WWF appearances was March 16, 2002 in Fan Axxess WrestleMania X8, where he was defeated by Tommy Dreamer. WWF's first game on Orton's television was a victory against Hardcore Holly at SmackDown! on April 25, 2002. Shortly thereafter, Orton became a fan favorite and placed in a series of games with Holly. In September 2002, Orton was recruited into the Raw brand, where he defeated Stevie Richards in his debut on the show. Within weeks of his debut on the Raw brand, Orton suffered a shoulder injury, keeping him out for months. While recovering, Orton still appears in Raw in his own Randy News Network segment, a weekly sketch showing him talking about his condition. This show interferes with Raw's other programming segments, which causes Orton to slowly transform himself into a narcissistic and selfish villain.
After the injury heals, Orton joins Evolution's stable, which consists of Ric Flair, Triple H and newcomer Batista. The group was encouraged in Raw 2003-2004, with the height of their dominance taking place after Armageddon in 2003 when all male titles in Baku were held by members of Evolution. In 2003, Orton spent much of his time helping Triple H overcome challenges for the World Heavyweight Championships. Orton joined Triple H in a Six Person Chamber Elimination Chamber for the World Heavyweight Championships at SummerSlam, primarily involved to secure the Triple H title, and was eliminated by Goldberg, but managed to successfully meet his goal and Triple H went on to eliminate Goldberg and thus defend his title.
Afterwards, Orton proclaimed himself as "The Legend Killer", a very talented young rookie so he called himself the future of professional wrestling. He started many of the story line disputes with the "legendary" wrestler and gained blasphemy because of his striking displeasure with many of the older and respected names in wrestling history. With the help of stablemate and Ric Flair's mentor, he defeated Shawn Michaels at Unforgiven in the first game of many famous profiles known as "Legend versus Legend Killer." During this time, Orton begins to use the step that will be his signature finisher, RKO, the jump cutter named after his initials. Orton soon defeated Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental Championship at Armageddon on 14 December 2003. With this victory, Orton started the longest Intercontinental government in seven years, holding the title for seven months. Orton continued to establish himself as a "Legend Killer" throughout 2004, challenging middle-aged wrestler Mick Foley. Famous for his hardcore match and his ability to deal with extreme pain, Foley offered Orton a "Legend Versus Legend Killer" match for the Intercontinental Championship. At Backlash, in a bloody game involving tacks and barbed wire, Orton beat Foley. Orton then spat in the face of the Harley Race on April 26, 2004 Raw . Two months later at Bad Blood, he defended the Intercontinental Championship against Shelton Benjamin. In July, at Vengeance, Edge defeated Orton to win the Intercontinental Championship, ending the title power of Orton's 210 days.
The youngest world champion (2004-2005)
After losing the Intercontinental Championship, Orton became the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship after winning 20-man battle royal on 26 July. At SummerSlam, Orton beat Chris Benoit for the championship. Orton became the youngest world champion in WWE history at the age of 24 years. Benoit congratulates Orton after the game, shaking his hand for showing the ability to "be a man". The next night at Raw, after Orton managed to defend his title against Benoit in a rematch, Evolution threw Orton a fake celebration just to reveal that they were not happy with his new victory. While Batista had Orton leaning on his shoulders in excitement, Triple H gave him a thumbs-up thrill and then suddenly turned it into a thumbs down, followed by Batista who drops Orton to the mat. Ric Flair and Batista attack Orton in the ring as Triple H reveals his jealousy for the Orton title. He orders Orton to hand over the championship, but he refuses, spits on Triple H's face and strikes him with a title belt. Orton's split with Evolution started a new storyline for him as a fan favorite as he continued to fight with his former stablemates. A month later, Orton lost his championship to Triple H at Unforgiven. Seeking revenge, Orton attacked the Evolution members, catching them with surprise during the show by giving them a big cake as a make-up gift, which he came from somewhere to hit and embarrass the group. On Taboo Tuesday, Orton beat Ric Flair in a Steel Cage game. After this, Orton experienced another impulse, becoming General Manager of the Raw brand for a week following the provisions of the match at the Survivor Series where he won for his team with last pinning Triple H in a 4-on-4 Survivor Series match. He continues to fight with Triple H, using his authority to put his opponents at a severe loss during the title defense. Orton was given another chance at the championship in January 2005, but lost in a six-man Chamber Elimination Championship for Triple H in the New Year's Revolution. On January 10th Raw , Orton beat Batista to earn a game against Triple H at Royal Rumble for the World Weight Class title. At Royal Rumble, Triple H beat Orton to defend the World title.
Orton began his on-screen relationship with Stacy Keibler and fought off with Christian in February 2005. On February 28 Raw, Superstars Billy Graham made an appearance, in which he suggested Orton to "go where no wrestlers [had been ] lost before ".
Orton then produced a copy of SmackDown magazine, which featured The Undertaker on its cover. Heeding Graham's advice, Orton said he would break away from all other wrestlers by ending the Undeterk undervers undoubtedly in WrestleMania. Throughout March 2005, Orton mocked The Undertaker, claiming he was not afraid of him. On March 21st Raw , Orton turned into a criminal once again after he gave RKO to his unsuspecting girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, dropping his unconscious. During Orton's promo, he ran for cover when the signs of The Undertaker's appearance (light, darkness, or smoke) occurred. When legendary wrestler Jake Roberts suggested Orton not to underestimate The Undertaker, Orton did RKO on Roberts as well. In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania, Orton becomes more challenging and not afraid of The Undertaker, mocking and attacking him in the ring following the distraction of his father, Bob Cowboy. At WrestleMania 21, the tough game did not work for Orton when he lost despite his father's intervention.
The next night at Raw, Orton faces Batista, who has become a World Heavyweight Champion. Orton stated on screen that his game with The Undertaker has aggravated a shoulder injury. While absent, Orton appears on Raw and claims that he is not eligible for the WWE Draft Lottery because of his injury. He was told by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that he was indeed a candidate for the draft, leaving the possibility of a return to SmackDown! Orton returns to WWE programming for SmackDown! on June 16, announces that he is the second choice in the 2005 draft draw. He revived his feud with The Undertaker, defeating him at SummerSlam after a distraction from his father. Two months later, Orton and his father Bob Orton defeated The Undertaker in a Handicap Casket game, after Randy Orton and his father Bob locked the Undertaker in a coffin and, in a move similar to Kane at Rumble Royal 1998, a mince hole at the top of the coffin with an ax, poured gasoline over the coffin and burned it, kayfabe killed The Undertaker. The following month, Orton replaces Eddie Guerrero as a participant in Team Smackdown's annual elimination match against Team Raw in the Survivor Series, having lost a qualifying match for Rey Mysterio. In that game, Orton was the only wrestler left in the game for the third year in a row, as he pinned Shawn Michaels to a win for Team Smackdown. At the event, The Undertaker returned by emerging from a lit coffin and attacking the SmackDown superstar who came to the ring to celebrate Team Smackdown's victory. On episode Smackdown! after the Survivor Series, The Undertaker intervened in a match between Rey Mysterio and the Big Show after Kane intervened. Randy Orton RKO'd the Undertaker, he then hit the Undertaker with a tire iron and place it on the back of the Mysterio the lowrider has been pushed into the ring, he then reverses the lowrider to the SmackDown set, causing an explosion. The hostilities were eventually resolved by the Hell in a Cell match at Armageddon, where The Undertaker offered to retire if he lost. On December 16th, The Undertaker entered the ring to give a promo while one of his druids appeared standing in the ring. The RKO ongoing Undertaker from Orton in a surprise attack. Druid reveals himself as Orton's father, who delivers the Orton The Undertaker jar, which according to the storyline allows anyone who holds it to control The Undertaker. The Undertaker, however, defeated both Ortons in Hell in a Cell match, ending their nine-month feud.
After Armageddon, Orton entered the Royal Rumble 2006 game as the thirtieth and final wrestler, but he was knocked out by Rey Mysterio. Mysterio won the match and shot the title, and Orton urged him to place a title shot at stake in a match at No Way Out. In the previous weeks No Way Out, Orton made a controversial comment about Eddie Guerrero, a friend of Mysterio who had died several months earlier, in an attempt to get hot criminals. Many fans felt the comment was so disliked so quickly after Guerrero's death in November 2005. Orton won at No Way Out, earning Mysterio title for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22. General Manager Smackdown Theodore Long added Mysterio back to WrestleMania 22 title matches , making it a three-match match between Orton, Mysterio and then-champion Kurt Angle. On April 2nd at WrestleMania 22, Orton was pinned by Mysterio, making Mysterio the World Heavyweight Champion and ending the competition on their screens.
Rated-RKO (2006-2007)
On April 4, Orton was suspended for sixty days for "unprofessional behavior". In an interview, Orton stated, "My behavior does not deserve to be a champion, which is what I will do again when I get back". To cover the suspension, a script injury was made, in which Kurt Angle broke Orton's ankle during a grudge match. Orton returned from suspension in June to the Raw brand, where he entered the rivalry with Angle, culminating in a match at One Night Stand and Vengeance before engaging in a story line feud with Hulk Hogan. Orton began cutting off the old Hogan's derogatory promo and playing with the eighteen-year-old Hogan's daughter, Brooke. In SummerSlam, the two met in a "Legend vs. Legend Killer" game, which Hogan won.
After the newly reformed D-Generation X (DX) (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) spent Edge WWE Championship many times, Edge approached Orton and asked him to join forces to defeat the team. Orton, whose championship leadership had been terminated by Triple H in 2004, agreed, formed a Rank-RKO tag team. Both became the first to beat DX since their reunion and quickly dominated the Raw brand tag team division to become World Tag Team Champions. As part of the angle, Rated-RKO attacked Ric Flair with a steel chair to make DX angry on November 27th. On the New Year's Revolution, Rated-RKO faced the DX in defense of the title, but the game was declared no contest when Triple H suffered a legitimate injury during the game. With Triple H running out of action, Rated-RKO continues their on-screen rivalry with the remaining DX members, Shawn Michaels. Michaels teamed up with John Cena to defeat Rated-RKO for the tag team championship on 29 January. After losing the tag team title, both Edge and Orton focus on the WWE Championship, causing friction within the group. They lost three threat matches against Shawn Michaels for a title game at WrestleMania 23. They both competed in Money in the Bank money match at the same event, but the match was won by Mr. Kennedy. Finally, they are faced with four deadly ways to a title against Cena and Michaels at Backlash, but Cena defends his title. Their alliance effectively ends after Edge is designed for SmackDown. Orton then continued his "Legend Killer" persona, attacking Shawn Michaels. Using frequent attacks to the head, including an increase in DDT and running to the face, Orton defeats Michaels on Judgment Day. When the kayfabe was injured and Michaels's concussion collapsed in the ring, the referee was forced to stop the match and give Orton a victory. Orton continued his attack when he engaged in hostilities with Rob Van Dam, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and Sgt. Massacre. During this time the commentators noted how Orton crept and stalked his victim like a snake; this causes "The Viper" to be a nickname for Orton.
Legacy (2007-2010)
On July 23rd Raw , Orton was named the number-one nominee for the John Cena WWE Championship. Three times before their scheduled bout in SummerSlam, Orton attacks Cena with RKO. Orton lost the title game when Cena clamped him after FU . The next night at Raw, Orton demanded a rematch, but General Manager Rawal William Regal refused. He then appealed to Mr. McMahon, who offered him a shot if he "proved himself". That night, Orton intervened in the Cena game, attacking him before kicking his father, who was at the ringside, in the head. McMahon gave Orton a rematch at Unforgiven, which he won by disqualification when Cena refused to stop punching in the corner; However, Cena retains the championship because the title can not change hands with disqualification. He returned to Raw on September 1st, criticizing all the champions, including World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, whom he scolded and slapped for letting Cryme Tyme steal their belts. It inspired them to try to gain Orton's respect. They achieved this at Unforgiven when, with the new Manu stablemate, they attacked the World Pound Weight Champion CM Punk, forcing him to vacate his title before his nightly defense schedule. This caused Orton to face Shane in a Boundless game in No Way Out, which he won. The next night at Raw, Orton faces Shane again in an unapproved match, which ends without a contest when he strikes Shane in the head, thus making him unable to continue the match. Stephanie then ran to the ring to take care of her sister, but Orton attacked her with RKO. This drew Triple H into hostility, claiming that Orton "crossed the line" when he attacked Stephanie, his real wife. Later, Orton claimed that everything he did was part of a plan to take revenge on Triple H after he drove him out of Evolution; according to Orton, Triple H "ruined his life", so Orton would do the same and take all that Triple H care about away from him.
