Mixed martial arts career
Prior to entering UFC, Thomas held a MMA record of 12-1 including victories over UFC lightweight champions of the future Jens Pulver and Dokonjonosuke Mishima, with his only defeat coming to UFC lightweight challenger Caol Uno. Thomas made his UFC debut at UFC 32, in a battle against UFC Lightweight and Welterweight champion the future of B.J. Penn, where he was defeated by a TKO (strike) in the first round. Thomas is back at UFC 33, beating Fabiano Iha with a unanimous decision.
At UFC 39, Thomas faces Japanese superstar Caol Uno in a rematch. The fight is part of the tournament to determine the new Lightweight UFC Champion. After three rounds, Thomas lost by a unanimous decision. The ensuing battle is a split decision victory over UFC heavyweight champion future Matt Serra at UFC 41. This fight will prove somewhat controversial, as one of the judges misjudged the score he set for Thomas in the reserved column for Serra. This led to Serra being declared the winner by a decision, but the error was found and Thomas and his team were informed of the change, giving Thomas a decision of a split victory. This will be UFC Thomas's last fight for 3 years.
Thomas was a contestant at The Ultimate Fighter 4 where he beat Mikey Burnett in the first half, before losing to training partner Chris Lytle with a semi-final decision. Thomas returned in the final on November 11, 2006, to face Rich Clementi, winning through the bare nudes behind in the second half.
Thomas was subsequently beaten by handing over (behind naked chokes) by UFC lightweight title contender Kenny Florian's future after injuring his knee in an attempt to repeal while headlining the main event at UFC Fight Night 11. Doctors said in an attempt to repeal that Thomas tore the meniscus and stretched his PCL. UFC's last fight was a unanimous decision for Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 13. He was released from UFC contract after this fight.
After his loss to Neer, Thomas decided to drop the heavyweight into a featherweight (145 pounds). He made his debut in the featherweight against Dustin Pieken securing a triangle choke in the first half. He has followed it with a TKO win over Gabe Lemley and Dustin Pague.
Thomas has signed a contract with Shine Fights and is expected to make his debut against Ricardo Mayorga on May 15 in Fayetteville, North Carolina but was canceled after Don King was given orders to prevent the Mayor from fighting.
Thomas is scheduled to return after a two-year layoff on October 7, 2011, at Fight Time 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a promotion led by his Top Team American boxing coach Howard Davis Jr. But Thomas was in a car accident before the incident and had to be hospitalized for his injuries. His struggle against George Sheppard is scheduled to be the highlight of Fight Time 7: The Return of Din Thomas.
On January 2, 2014, Thomas announced his resignation from mixed martial arts.
