Giovani Govan Bernard (born November 22, 1991) is an American football that ran back for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He was composed by Bengals in the second round of the NFL Draft 2013. He plays football in North Carolina.

Initial years

Bernard was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. He started playing football for a local football league, Boca Jets. He plays football at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he is a teammate with Florida State Security, Lamarcus Joyner. While in high school, he was ranked 2nd in Florida by Orlando Sentinel and No. 12 who returned in the United States by Rivals.com . He is the younger brother of a former Oregon State who runs back Yvenson Bernard.

Bernard is the son of Haitian immigrant parents, who has a dry cleaning business in Boca Raton, Florida.

Bernard was recruited by many schools and first committed to Notre Dame, but eventually decided to play for the University of North Carolina.

College career

Bernard enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and played for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team from 2010 to 2012. During the third day of practice, he tore the ACL on his right knee after trying to cut off a defender and redshirted for the 2010 season.

Bernard recovered from injury and became an early tailback for the Tar Heels in college football season 2011. He became the first North Carolina to run back in a rush for at least 100 yards in five straight games since Ethan Horton in 1984. His high-season came against Georgia Tech on September 24, 2011, rushing for 155 yards. In mid-October 2011, Bernard was added to the supervisory list for the Maxwell Prize, which is presented annually to the best players in college football. During the regular 2011 season, 1,222 yards rushed Bernard to 20th place among NCAA Division I FBS players. Bernard also received 326 yards and 14 goals in 10 games. Bernard was the first to run back to the 1,000 meter eclipse on the North Carolina plateau since Jonathan Linton did it in 1997. He is also the top freshman who ran back across the country in meters per game that season.

Overall, he finished the 2012 season with 1,278 yards rushing, 12 rushing touchdowns, 490 receiving yards, five touchdowns receiving, and two punt back touchdowns.

Professional career

Pre-draft

On December 14, 2012, Bernard announced that he entered the NFL Draft 2013. He is projected by the majority of analysts and scouts to be elected anywhere from the first to the third round. He finished the regular season with a total of 154 hurried attempts to 730 yard and received two goals, while also recording 49 receptions for 472 receiving yards in 16 matches and one start.

In the 18-16 Bengals playoff defeat to Pittsburgh Steelers, Bernard was injured on a hit by midfielder Ryan Shazier. He fumbled and lost the ball and did not return to the game and finished with six bring for 28 yards and two catches for two yards.

season 2016

On June 8, 2016, Bernard signed a three-year, $ 15.5 million contract extension with Bengals.
