Life and career

Jake Chapman was born in Cheltenham and Dinos Chapman in London. Their father was an art teacher of English and their mother an orthodox Greek Cypriots (hence "Jake" is a sister of the orthodox Iakovos, and "Dinos", which is typical of the orthodox Konstantinos). They grew up in Cheltenham but moved to Hastings where they attended the local school (William Parker School). Dinos studied at Ravensbourne College of Art (1980-1983), Jake at North East London Polytechnic (1985-88) before both enrolled at the Royal College of Art (1988-90), when they also worked as an assistant to the artists Gilbert and George.

Collaboration art

They started their own collaboration in 1991. The brothers often make pieces with plastic models or fiberglass mannequins of people. An early work consisted of eighty-three scenes of torture and derivative destruction from that recorded by Francisco Goya in his painting series, The Disasters of War (the work they later returned) was transformed into three small ones. dimensional plastic model. One of them later turned into a work of size, the Great Acts of Death, shown with Zygotic Acceleration, Biogenetic, Libidinal De-Sublimation Model (zoomed in x 1000) at the Sensation Show > in 1997.

The Chapman brothers continue the strange anatomy and pornography theme with a series of children's mannequins, sometimes fused together, with genitalia in place of facial features. Their statue Hell (2000) consists of a large number of Nazi miniature figures arranged in nine glass boxes arranged in a swastika form. In 2003, with a series of works called Insult to Injury , they changed a set of Goya paintings by adding funny faces. In protest against this work, Aaron Barschak (who later covered up the 21st birthday party of Prince William dressed in Osama bin Laden) threw a red paint pot over Jake Chapman during the conversation he conveyed in May 2003. Chapmans' Oeuvre is also referred to work by William Blake, Auguste Rodin and Nicolas Poussin. Jake Chapman has published a number of catalog essays and works of art criticism in himself, as well as a book, Meatphysics (The Book of Creation, 2003). The brothers have also designed the label for Becks beer as part of a series of limited edition labels produced by contemporary artists. Using titles from Tim Burton's movie, in 2004 they curated A Nightmare Before Christmas as part of the Some Tomorrow's Party music festival in Camber Sands. In October 2013, the Chapman brothers took part in Art Wars in Saatchi Gallery curated by Ben Moore. The artists were expelled with a stormtrooper helmet, which they turned into a work of art. The proceeds go to Dana Lost Tom founded by Moore to find his brother Tom who has been missing for over ten years. The work was also featured on the Regents Park platform as part of Art Below Regents Park.

Creativity Rape

From April to June 2003, Chapmans held a solo show at Oxford's Modern Art entitled The Rape of Creativity where "the enfants terribles Disaster of War which contains 80 etchings. The duo named their newly-damaged Insult to Injury . The BBC describes more about the art of exhibition: "Ronald McDonalds mutant image, a bronze statue of a painting that shows Hitler's sad face in a clown makeup and a great installation featuring old worn caravans and turds of fake dogs." The Daily Telegraph commented that the Chapman brothers had "succeeded in lifting the thieves of art historians by breaking something far more sacred to the art world than the human body - other works of art," they also noted that the effect of their work very strong.

The Chapman brothers were nominated for the Turner Prize in 2003. As well as including Injury for Injury , their Turner Prize showcased the debut of two new works Sex and Death Sex directly reference their previous work Great Deeds against the Dead . The original work shows three corpses being cut from the tree, Gender showing the same scenario, but in a high decomposition state. In addition the clown nose is now present on the corpse's skull; snakes, rats and insects (like those found in joke shops) cover that part. Death are two sex dolls, placed on top of each other, from end to end in sex position: although it looks made of plastic, it's actually made of bronze and is painted to look like plastic. That year the prize was finally won by Grayson Perry.

On May 24, 2004, fire in the storage warehouse destroyed many works from the Saatchi collection including Hell . The brothers then made a very similar, though wider, work called Hell Fucking .

Dispute with reporter

In 2006, journalist Lynn Barber claimed that she had received death threats from the brothers, after conducting interviews with them.

In 2007, they were criticized by journalist Johann Hari for adopting an anti-Enlightenment philosophy, and for Jake Chapman to say that boys who kill a toddler Liverpool, James Bulger, do "good social service." This follows a public media fight between Jake Chapman and journalist Carole Cadwalladr at The Observer and on the internet the year before. Cadwalladr tells the reader that Chapman drove him from their studio. Jake openly replied, "You can bless your readers with the weak tone of the English big-mouthed, but do not send them to my studio, I'll make [...] meat mince from them, ha ha ha."

Art by Adolf Hitler

In May 2008, the White Cube gallery showcased 13 watercolors painted by Adolf Hitler, where the brothers added hippie motifs. Jake Chapman describes most of the dictatorial work as a "horrible sight" that they are "prettified". The centerpiece and context of this exhibition are very similar to the artist Ira Waldron in his project "Die damen mit den Häsändchen", first exhibited at the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary art in May 2007. Waldron also held an artistic duel with Hitler, seen as an ordinary bohemian artist, by layering the motifs and colors on an expanded copy of the thirteen drawings.

Also included in the 2008 Chapmans exhibition are Fucking Hell , a remake of the Hell , and a series of eighteenth aristocrats and nineteenth-century oils.

In 2011, in their "Man of the Rainbow" and "Introspastic" series, Chapman Brothers produced further works based on the images of Hitler Geli Raubal and the same dogs that had previously been adapted by Ira Waldron in his 2007 exhibition.

Letter to Culture Secretary

On October 1, 2010, in an open letter to the Minister of Culture of the British government, Jeremy Hunt - signed by 27 next Turner Prize nominees, and 19 winners - his brothers opposed public fundraising for art in the future. In the letter, the cosignator describes art in Britain as "an incredible and fertile cultural and creative landscape."

Personal life

Jake Chapman

Jake married Rosemary Ferguson's fashion model in 2004. They have one child and live in Filkins, Oxfordshire.

In August 2014 Chapman was quoted as saying that taking the children to an art gallery is a "waste of time", stating that "children are not yet human." The commentary caused other well-known artists to speak out against Chapman's thought.

The BBC Art Critics, Will Gompertz refers to the hallmark of "YBA" as their ability to manipulate bargaining media to gain attention:

The formula is simple: When you have an exhibit to promote, say something a bit inflamed to the press, and keep an inch column (especially in August) and ticket sales jump.
Jake Chapman's comment about children and painting is a wonderful example of this art. It has aroused a lot of attention, strengthened the brat brands, and warned the English "angry" to Chapman's new show. Completed work.

Dinos Chapman

Dinos married Tiphaine de Lussy. They have two children and live in Spitalfields, London.

Both are members of Arts Emergency, an English charity working with children aged 16 to 19 in advanced education from diverse backgrounds.
