Riko E. Bishop (born December 15, 1956) is a Nebraska Appeals Court Judge appointed by Dave Heineman.

Early life and education

Bishop was born on December 15, 1956 in Nagoya, Japan. Bishop received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and English from Kearney State College in 1977. He then taught English and creative writing at several Elkhorn Junior High School schools from 1978 to 1980, Mission Junior High School from 1981 to 1983 and Bellevue Public Schools from 1983 to 1985 and worked for the marketing firm Bader Rutter & amp; Associates from 1986 to 1989 before attending law school. He then received a Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1992.

Legal career

Immediately after law school, 1992-1993 Bishop served as a judicial justice officer for Chief Justice Richard D. Sievers of the Nebraska Appellate Court. He then serves as a lawyer with Perry, Guthery, Haase & amp; Gessford's law firm, conducts general civil litigation and appeals. He has represented the plaintiff in personal injury, medical malpractice and employment law cases. In previous years, he has built a practice of mediation within the company, which he has been practicing for 20 years. During his time with the law firm, from 1998 to 1999 he served as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Nebraska College of Law.

Nebraska Appeals Court

On July 19, 2013, Governor Dave Heineman appointed the Bishop to be the Nebraska Appeals Court Judge. He filled the void created by his retirement Judge Richard D. Sievers.

Considerations of the Supreme Court of the State

In July 2015, the Bishop was considered to sit at the Supreme Court of Nebraska along with other candidates, then-Judge Stephanie F. Stacy and attorney Amie C. Martinez. Governor Pete Ricketts has finally selected Justice Stacy to replace retired judge Kenneth C. Stephan.
