Philip Wayne Johnson , known as Phil Johnson (born October 24, 1944), is a Texas Supreme Court Judge. He has held 8th place since 2005.
On March 15, 2005, Johnson was appointed to the state Supreme Court by Governor Rick Perry to fill vacancies made by the appointment of Michael H. Schneider to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas by US President George W. Bush.. Johnson was elected in 2006 to serve Schneider's remaining term and was re-elected in 2008 for a full six-year term.
Johnson's term currently ends on December 31, 2014. He won a re-election in Republican primary elections held on March 4, 2014, defeating the intraparty challenger Sharon Sue McCally (born 1960) from Houston, the 2nd Court of Texas Court of the Fourteenth Court Appeal and wife Lance Henry Lubel.Johnson surveyed 731,275 votes (64 percent) to McCally's 410,870 votes (36 percent).
Johnson was previously the Chief Justice of the District District Seventh District Court of Texas, who sits in Amarillo. Johnson was elected to the Seventh Court of Appeal in 1998 and became a Supreme Court Justice in 2002.
Johnson received a law degree from the Texas Tech University Law School in Lubbock. He is a "respectable alumnus" from Texas Tech Law School and a member of the Coif Order. He practiced law from 1975 to 1998 with the Lubbock company of Crenshaw, Dupree & amp; Milam, L.L.P. His specialties are civil trials and personal injury law. Previously, he was a pilot in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1972 and a Vietnam War veteran. He received the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross twice, the Vietnam Sultanate Cross, and several Air Medals. He and his wife, Carla, live in Amarillo; they have five children.
As a lifelong Republican, Johnson brings support from Texas Right to Life, Governor Perry, twelve state executive judges, including former Chief Judges Tom Phillips and Wallace B. Jefferson, and both Texas senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
