History

In 2011, Toronto Rehab opened The iDAPT Center Rehabilitation Research, where technologies and treatments to improve the lives of aging, sick or injured people were tested in a simulated environment.

On July 1, 2011, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute became part of the University Health Network.

With the Special Law, on November 2, 1998, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute was formed by the merger of three hospitals. This is:

  • Toronto Rehabilitation Authority
  • Lyndhurst Spinal Center Cable Center
  • Toronto Rehabilitation Center

Lyndhurst began in 1945 as Lyndhurst Lodge to re-handle Canadian veterans with spinal cord injuries from World War II. The institute is named after the road from the first site on Lyndhurst Avenue in Toronto and headed by Albin T. Jousse. In 1950 it was acquired by the Canadian Paraplegic Association and in 1974 moved to its current and larger location, the former site of Mount Sinai Hospital when Mount Sinai moved to a new facility next to it. In 1998 merged with several other rehabilitation institutions to form TRI.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto was formed in 1997 with the merger of two other hospitals, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Hillcrest. The Queen Elizabeth was founded in 1874 as a chronic treatment and long-term health care facility. In the 1930s added services included physiotherapy and occupational therapy. In the 1970s it became a special rehabilitation institution. Hillcrest Hospital opened in 1886 as a long-term treatment and evolved into a rehabilitation institution in the 1970s. This clinic specializes in treating stroke, heart and amputation patients who need rehabilitation needs.

The Toronto Rehabilitation Center was established in 1922 to address the long-term health care needs of World War I veterans.
