Harris was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; son Terry and Julie Harris. Throughout high school, Harris is a superior athlete and picks up basketball and volleyball at Wauwatosa Middle East School. He played volleyball for just one season, a season in which he earned all honors conferences, before he ruled it out to focus on basketball. Harris was ridiculed by injury after his second year of high school and was unable to participate in the summer basketball and tournament camps that were once important in the recruitment process.
Harris exploded his senior season at Wauwatosa East in 2001, setting up a school scoring record through an unbeaten regular season. Harris was named "Mr. Basket" from Wisconsin for 2001, defeating Travis Diener of Fond du Lac High School. Harris finally accepted an offer to play for Dick Bennett at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bennett retired in the middle of the upcoming season and when Harris arrives on campus, Bo Ryan is head coach.
Harris's number 20 shirt has been retired by Wauwatosa East at a ceremony held in 2007.

College career
In Harris's freshman season, the 2001-2002 season, he became a starter on an unknown team. The Badgers came into the season predicted to finish as low as ninth in the Big Ten Conference (which had eleven teams at the time). In a team led by senior Charlie Wills and Travon Davis, Badgers won an unexpected Big Ten Championship (shared with three other teams: Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio State University).
Harris's sophomore season is the year of his "escape". Harris, along with senior Kirk Penney and fellow sophomore Mike Wilkinson, led Badgers to the second Big Ten Championship in a row, where he was named the Most Extraordinary Player of the tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, Badger reaches "Sweet 16". In the Sweet 16 match against the University of Kentucky, Harris showed off his skills in front of a national audience, despite the end of Badger's defeat.
The 2003-2004 season saw Harris establishing himself as one of the top players in the country. Harris is a leader in the team and is considered a "coach on the floor" by Bo Ryan. He received the Top Ten Best Players of the Year and Silver Basketball award, and was crowned the Second All-American Team. Harris decided to leave college early after his junior year playing in the NBA; However, he currently takes summer classes to earn degrees in sociology. NBA Career>
Day of concepts
A few days before the draft, the Washington Wizards and the Dallas Mavericks agreed a deal involving the Wizards' overall fifth choice went to the Mavs along with Jerry Stackhouse and Christian Laettner instead of Antawn Jamison. The NBA Rules prevented the team from trading the picks draft for two consecutive years (in addition to details of a kicker's trading in Laettner's contract) so the deal was postponed for a while until the actual draft in which Washington picked Harris and then traded it with the Mavericks to finalize the deal. The Mavs plan was to bring Harris along slowly under the care of the star point keeper of all Steve Nash but Nash eventually left the team through a free agent and signing with the Phoenix Suns. Dallas Mavericks (2004-2008) >
In Harris's rookie season, he averaged 5.7 ppg and 2.2 APG, but installed PER 14.69. He ranked 2nd in the NBA in stealing per 48 minutes at 3.15 (behind Larry Hughes), and in November 2004 was named Rookie of the Month. Although he started for most of the early part of the season, his playing time was reduced during the season.
Harris showed marked improvement in the early stages of the 2005-06 NBA season, especially when it had to score; as a result, his minutes improved and he took on the handling of the ball from Jason Terry. He is known for his incredible speed, earning comparison with other NBA guards like Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns and his best friend, Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade. He ended the year with an average of 9.9 ppg and 3.2 apg. He increased his leap and his ability to divide the defense and get to the edge. Unfortunately, he suffered a foot injury in the middle of the year and missed most of the rest of the regular season. Harris returned for the playoffs and played a big role in bringing down the old Mavericks rival, the San Antonio Spurs. Spurs have dominated the Mavs in recent playoff history, ending their playoff run in 6 games in the 2003 Playoffs and 5 games in the 2001 playoffs. Devin Harris and Mavericks reached the 2006 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Miami Heat 4 game to 2.
In the 2006-07 season, Harris averaged 10.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. After becoming a starting point keeper for the Mavericks in the 2006-07 season, he helped lead the Mavericks to a record 67 team wins in regular season just because of annoyance by the eight-seeded Golden State Warriors in the 2007 Playoff. In mid 2007-08 season, Harris recorded an average career highs with 14.4 points per game and 5.4 assists per game. He was promoted to co-captain in 2007-08 along with Dirk Nowitzki.
New Jersey Nets (2008-2011)
On February 19, 2008, he traded to the New Jersey Nets with Keith Van Horn, Trenton Hassell, DeSagana Diop, Maurice Ager, $ 3 million in cash and two first round draft picks (2008, 2010) instead of Jason Kidd, Malik Allen, and Antoine Wright. In his debut at the Nets against the Milwaukee Bucks, he scored 21 points and five assists in less than 21 minutes. Ending the end of the game he was treated with shouts of "Dev-in Harris! Dev-in Harris!", And the first 5,000 participants received a Harris shirt in the next Nets home game against the San Antonio Spurs. After New Jersey missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years, he stated that he was dissatisfied with the way he played towards the end of the season and he said he mainly had to work on his assertiveness over offenses over the summer.
On November 7, 2008, Harris posted his career-high 38 points against All-Star Allen Iverson, who made his debut with the Detroit Pistons. He then improved the mark on Nov. 30 with 47 points, including 21 goals in the first half and fourth quarter, against the Suns in the Nets 'first win at Phoenix since 1993. On December 19, Dallas's first match at the Nets' Izod Center since trading between the two the team, Harris had a remarkable performance posting 41 points and 13 assists for the season in a blowout victory against his former team, while outperforming a player he basically traded, Jason Kidd. Toward the end of the game, Nets fans sang "Thanks Cuba!" (Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban is sitting on the sidelines). On January 29, 2009 Harris was named the reserve for the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. This is Harris's first time being named the All-Star in his career. On February 23, 2009 in a match against the 76ers, Harris converted a half-field ringer to beat a 47-foot shot, known as "The Harris Heave," to win the 98-96 game.
In a cost-cutting move, the Nets traded Vince Carter on the same day of the 2009 NBA Draft, leaving Harris to take on the role of team captain. Harris came out for most of the season with shoulder and ankle injuries, including the start of the famous 0-18 team. His games, stats, and personal talent were far below the previous year, but he managed to bring his average back to just under 17 points per game and 6 assists per game. To reduce the risk of injury, Harris took part in a weight training program during the summer of 2010 at the Nets head coach (and former head coach Harris in Dallas) Avery Johnson. He managed to add 15 pounds of muscle and also worked on his defense with Tim Grover.
Utah Jazz (2011-2012)
On February 23, 2011, Harris traded along with rookie Derrick Favors, 2 draft picks and $ 3 million cash to Utah Jazz in exchange for Deron Williams. Atlanta Hawks (2012-2013) >
Pada 11 Juli 2012, Harris dijual ke Atlanta Hawks untuk Marvin Williams.
Tugas Kedua Dallas Mavericks (2013-2018)
In early July 2013, it was widely reported that Harris would return to his original team, the Dallas Mavericks. However, the deal was later canceled after it was discovered that Harris needed surgery on a toe injury. Despite concerns of injury, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declared his intention to reunite with Harris, stating that he will return to the team after the restructured deal, and on July 31, Harris signed a contract with the Mavericks for one year, a $ 1.3 million contract.
On January 18, 2014, Harris made his season debut and scored six points in 17 minutes off the bench in a 127-111 Mavericks' loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. He played well from the bench for the Mavericks during the second half of the 2013-14 season, scoring a season-high 20 points on March 9 in a victory over the Indiana Pacers. His game on the bench as the Mavericks' first defeat of the San Antonio Spurs was impressive, scoring 17 points in three of seven game series.
On July 17, 2014, Harris signed a contract with the Mavericks on a four-year, $ 16.5 million contract. Harris enters the 2014-15 season as a dodgy veteran of the team and much healthier than the previous year, and it shows. He missed just six games throughout the season, giving a constant splash from the bench behind Rajon Rondo and Monta Ellis. In the team's last four games of the season on April 10, Harris scored a season-high 21 points against the Denver Nuggets. He went on to play in four of the first five Mavericks playoffs against the Houston Rockets. His 2014 playoff form did not follow until 2015, as he scored a double in just one game and shot 8-of-23 from the field in a 4-1 series defeat.
Harris plays in 40 of the team's 46 first games to start the 2015-16 season, averaging 7.4 points per game off the bench. The huge left leg tension suffered in late January forced him to not play for 10 games, returning to the line-up on Feb. 21 against the Philadelphia 76ers.
On October 26, 2016, Harris was ruled out for the first three weeks of the 2016-17 season after he dislocated his right toe in pre-season. He made his season debut on 30 November 2016 against the San Antonio Spurs after missing the first 16 games. Denver Nuggets (2018-present)
